Debbie Bliss Yarns

For years, Debbie Bliss has been feeding us with marvelous children's patterns. Her books include Kids' Country Knits, Bright Knits for Kids, and, more recently, How to Knit: The Definitive Knitting Course and Baby Style.

She has long been associated with Rowan, whose soft, fine wools seem to be an integral element of Bliss' designs. The launch of her own yarns (spun in Italy) seems perfectly timed with Rowan's recent forays into the world of more textured, novelty-style yarns.

If you're fond of "traditional" Rowan, or simply appreciate classic, somewhat conservative yarns, you'll enjoy experimenting with Debbie Bliss yarns.

You can buy any of these yarns online from Patternworks.

Merino DK

Merino DK
Merino forms the core of Bliss' yarns. The Merino DK is -- as you'd guess from the name -- 100% merino wool. It's soft and lofty, with a steady spin that will produce a consistent surface texture. Skeins are 100m/50g each, retailing for $5.95 and knitting up at 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm/4 inch square on 4mm (US 6) needles.

Merino Aran

Merino Aran
The Aran weight gives you the same bounce and elasticity as the DK, but with significantly more volume and loft. Skeins are 78m/50g each, with a retail price of $5.95. The gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows per 10cm/4 inch square on 5mm (US 8) needles.

Cashmerino Aran

Cashmerino
The luxury yarn within Bliss' line, Cashmerino consists of 55% merino, 33% microfiber, and 12% cashmere. Considering Bliss' focus on children's clothing, the presence of synthetic fibers in this yarn isn't necessarily a bad thing. It adds a good amount of strength and durability, meaning it's still appropriate for a special children's garment.

As with the Merino DK and Aran, Cashmerino is buoyant and smooth, with a smooth surface that won't get in the way of your design. Each 90m/50g skein knits up at 18 stitches and 24 rows per 10cm/4 inch square on 5mm (US8) needles. This heavy worsted yarn retails for $6.95 per skein.

Wool Cotton

Wool Cotton
Recognizing that not all climates support the wearing of wool year-round, Bliss also included a sport-weight wool/cotton blend similar to what's available from Rowan.

This 50% wool, 50% cotton blend knits up at 25 stitches and 34 rows per 10cm/4 inch square on 3.25mm (US3) needles. Put up is on 115m/50g skeins that retail for $6.95.
