New from Artful Yarns

JCA is a large yarn company that encompasses Reynolds (makers of the perennial favorite, Lopi), Unger, and luxury brand Adrienne Vittadini. The company's only weak area was novelty yarns.

JCA's Susan Mills and Nora Gaughan resolved to change this, and the result is a new brand called Artful Yarns. There are currently four yarns available. Each comes with a nifty one-skein pattern on the label, so you can test the yarn without having to make a significant financial investment.

You can buy any of these yarns online from The Handworks Gallery.

Classic Elite look out -- La Gran now has some stiff competition. Portrait is a lovely multicolored 70% mohair, 25% viscose, and 5% polyester blend.

It knits up at 3.75 sts per inch on US 9 needles. There are currently seven colors available. Each skein holds a generous 164 yards and includes a one-skein pattern for a lacy scarf.

Jazz

This yarn is a refreshingly unusual blend of 50% superfine alpaca and 50% wool. It has the thickness and definition of licorice, with a softness that is distinctly alpaca.

There are six colors available. Each one is a relatively funky blend of colors. For example, Ella blends purple and several shades of brown, while Miles is a mix of chestnut, sage, and grey.

One skein gives you 246 yards and knits up at 4 sts per inch on US 8 needles. Skeins include a one-skein pattern for a cute hat and mittens.

Circus

This multicolored boucle is lots of fun. It knits up at 2.5 sts per inch on US 11 needles, comes in 93-yard skeins, and includes a funky pattern for a pair of socks using one skein.

The fiber composition is 95% wool and 5% acrylic.
