Knitter's Review

two Artyarns yarns

One-skein wonders make yarn companies cringe. They'd rather you stock up on a few dozen skeins for a sweater or a blanket.

But some yarns are so decadent (and often so pricey) that they beg for smaller, special one- or two-skein projects. Artyarns falls into this category. As if reading our minds, owner Iris Schreier has just published a collection of patterns that take the one-skein notion literally one skein further.

A Month of Missives
This may have little to do with knitting, but I think it's charming. Remember how we used to sit down and write letters to one another? They weren't always long or particularly eloquent, but they were so much fun to receive. Novelist Mary Robinette Kowal has challenged us to A Month of Letters. The idea is simple: Write and mail one item each day of February—a card, letter, maybe even just a sketch or a snippet of yarn—to a friend. Depending on when you get this, it may already be February 2nd—but I won't tell. Want to play?

Meet Me in Madison
I'm Wisconsin-bound next weekend. After two days of teaching all my greatest hits at the Sow's Ear in Verona, I'll be delivering my State of the Skein address to the Madison Knitters' Guild. It's my first visit to the region, and I'd love to see you there.

In the Forums: Best Blends?
Emilie has caught a serious case of the sock bug. She's read the book but still feels overwhelmed by all the yarn choices out there. She needs our help. Can you steer her toward the right fiber blends for socks?
