I just ordered a bunch of samples of silk from Treenway Silk in Canada.I'm getting silk cocoons, silk carrier rods, silk hankies and degummed throwers silk. I purchased the silk in colors to complement some alpaca I'm carding and spinning...can I card any of these silks in with the alpaca?

Definitely not the cocoons. I don't know carrier rods. Hankies and throwers silk will add a lot of texture to your yarn, and I'd feed them into the carder in very small, hand-teased/torn up pieces. And I still don't know what they will do to the carder's teeth - be careful! Finally, I have no idea about the stability/useability of the resulting yarn as neither alpaca nor silk is "sticky" or elastic.

Cocoons can be used, but will need to be either soaked and cut up OR just cut into small pieces. The other forms will work, but as Klara says will need to be teased or torn. Hopefully you have a "fur" drum on the carder; it will make things easier. I suggest, based on my own past experience, that you first card two very thin alpaca batts, then sprinkle the silk on one of them, place the other on top, and attenuate the layers before a blending pass through the carder. The resulting yarn should be beautiful, with lots and lots of drape.
Oh, the carder will need a good cleaning after this is done; silk is dreadfully sticky!

Thanks Klara and Pamela for the good ideas...I have the alpaca batts already carded so will experiment with the layering technique.
