Believe it or not....I found this bag at Cracker Barrel. It is marketed as a gardening tool bag, but works perfectly for me as a knitting bag....cost was only $29.99. It a subtle shade of green with lots of pockets. Outside, there are 6 pockets. There are 2 pockets on each side (front/back) that have a subtle brown print (outdoorsy) on them + 1 pocket on each end. Inside, there are 4 more pockets. 2 large pocket on inside front/back which I use for magazines/books and, again, 1 inside pocket on each end. Padded handles make it comfortable to carry, even when loaded heavy. Here's the link if you're interested

Wow! Looks nice, I like that it sits upright. One of my biggest issues with "knitting" bags is the fact that so many seem to almost collapse inward or not open well.

I found this bag last week:

http://www.dickblick.com/products/bagworks-crafters-tote/

It's a crafter's tote (under 10 dollars!) with pockets for single needles and DPNs and all your other tools. The picture doesn't show the other side, which has a single flat pocket that's the perfect size for magazines. The center pocket has plenty of room to hold yarn and your WIP.

MindyO--the tote doesn't collapse (once you have something in it). However, you can't close it.

It's funny how one can find cheap options that work out just fine. One of my favorite "knitting" bags is a zip-up tote bag I got from Wal-Mart for $5.

Thanks for sharing the Crafters Tote. It looks perfect. I pass by Blicks on my way to work....I will definitely check it out. Thanks again.

I have one super lovely bag I bought at Stitches last year and another I got from the lost and found at the library after it hadn't been claimed for eons.

Both have zippers, straps, and pouches. The one I bought is much fancier and I wish there were a website for Open Road in Greenwich Village in NYC. All I can do is give you Barbara's phone

212 - six 67 - 4785 Not cheap and worth every penny.

--------I've had trouble logging on so yes, that was me who wrote the above about the bag from lost and found as well as the one I bought at Stitches.

I still buy boat and rigger's bags at Harbor Freight. Cheap thrills.

My favorite, because it's waterproof on the bottom and sides, is a bag I got from the Animal Rescue Site It's lovely and it was cheap. Maybe they have some more there...

I love it because it's big, has handles and strap, and I can sit it on wet grass or hang it over the arm of my chair.

Though I deeply admire some lovely bags displayed around here, sometimes you just have to hop after the cheaper stuff.

ETA: The Breast Cancer site has them, in pink again! The original.

tigger, I'm going to get another one of them, too. Love those things.

Lelani, is the Namaste bag very heavy? I love it but I just put away a leather bag that was breaking a shoulder, here. so to speak.

I'm still using several nicely made big zip pocket cordura type nylon bags from our textbook adoption freebies a few years ago. This is another adoption year. I have high hopes. Free is even better than cheap.

The Nantucket Bag, the original diddy bagg, arrived today. It has 30 or 36 pockets, can be used as backpack, shoulder bag, tote and whatever else one has in mind. I immediately loaded it with several projects and will put in the first "10 min." items tomorrow. It is canvas, quite tall, and once I get the pockets cut to the sizes most useful, I'll be quite satisfied. It is top of the line but I think my knitting deserves the best I can afford. I'm very proud of what I do as I believe most knitters are. Again, it's nantucketbagg.com.

I've had my eye on the "Swift Knitting bag" on tombihn.com. It was built based on feedback and prototypes with knitty.com. It looks great, but is a little more than I want to spend ($80). Tom Bihn also makes a "utility bag" that a knitter ended up buying even though she went into the store (Seattle only) to buy the swift knitting bag, based on a review I read. If anybody has either, I'd love to hear reviews. If I end up buying one I'll try to post a review.

My Mom has the Swift bag and likes it a lot. I don't have one myself. I do have one of the yarn stuff sacks and like it a LOT -- great as a sock bag. I'm planning on getting another. (I do have two messenger bags and one Brain Cell laptop case.)

Bihn stuff is spendy, and to date I haven't been able to justify spending that much on a knitting bag. I usually just shove my knitting in a canvas grocery bag when I need to take it somewhere, and when I go to a knit night I generally take it in a basket.

But all their products are top-notch quality, and you gotta expect stuff to be more expensive when it's made in the US by people paid living wages. :-) For laptop bags, messenger bags, and check-on luggage, they certainly can't be beat.

If I were looking to spend a LOT of money on a knitting bag, I'd get their Swift in cork (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/KNIT/TB0660-CRK) -- I have some stuff with the cork fabric and it's magnificent. However, I'm currently not looking to spend a lot of money on a knitting bag. :-)

Gotta say, I've been really nearly drooling over that Bihn Swift bag in the cork fabric. It is totally awesome in form and I believe it would be in function. I would love to have one for Christmas... my only fear is that it would be a magnet for someone inclined to "lift" and carry away. Then I'd not only lose my fabulous bag, but whatever might be in it at the time...

I have looked at the Namaste bags, but none of them have pulled on me significantly enough to cause me to open the wallet. I had my eye on an imitation alligator bag in a similar style at a local store, in a great deep tomato red, but it was also a bit more than I wanted to pay, at $49, significantly less than a Namaste.

How do those "synthetic leather" bags hold up, over time? I don't tend to buy knitting bags, though I have two Elizabeth Austen bags I bought at Tuesday Morning, a discount chain, for around $20 each (they sell for significantly more than that at a knitting store). But they are fabric, quilted, and will last a while, and I can toss them in the washer. My expensive bags are COACH, I have 4, and they are too small for knitting bags, but they are all well over 14 years old, and will probably outlive me, even with hard, careless, and heavy use. I cannot afford a Coach bag for my knitting, though I'd love one for my laptop computer!

I keep thinking of that red vinyl bag, which would serve as a purse on one side, and knitting bag for small items like socks or maybe a scarf on the other. The Namaste that I like the looks of, is the Laguna.

I bought the Swift a couple of years ago. It is so perfect that I stopped looking at other knitting bags. It stands up, has clear pockets to see what's in each, a large area for storing - the button closure has different "settings" so you can latch to accommodate whatever you're carrying. Over time I'm sure buying the Swift has saved me money since I haven't purchased anything else!

Ah, now see, THIS sort of review is exactly why I keep thinking of buying one! In comparison to other bags, Coach costs a fortune. But then, if they last 15 to 20 years, and I don't buy all these other cheap bags in the meantime (because they are out of style, or wear out, or whatever), the Coach seems very inexpensive by comparison. I have issues with the Coach "Outlet Store"; the two that are in the Seattle area have misleading salespeople, who say that the classic Coach line is discontinued, and they sell these so-called discount bags, not a lot less than the classics, which are NOT discontinued, just not sold in the outlet stores. And the outlet store versions are often cloth, sort of "trendy", and wouldn't last like the classic bags.

I think the Tom Bihn bags are the same as the Coach Classics. Likely to last me 10 years or more, especially the cork. Then the cost breakdown is positively cheap!

Thanks, Pamela.
