How do.
Sometimes I feel like a country mouse (vs. the city mouse who knows all!) when it comes to current project & pattern trends. As I was thinking about this today, I realized that I had so many cool knitters who could tell me what the hot & new patterns & projects are.
Do tell - what's cool in your knitting group & at your LYS?

Interesting question. I can only tell you what's in my world at the moment (because I have way too much yarn and not enough time to knit it)!
What's hot on my personal list is anything that that suggesta sculpture. The stuff I am really attracted to have a sculpted element to them. Doesn't matter what it is;; if there's some architecture attached to it, I'm interested.
But at the LYS? Well, no clue!

I've noticed a lot of non traditional shawl shapes lately. Short rowed shallow crescents, big sweeping wings on otherwise triangular shaped shawls, asymmetrical shapes, anything goes. I love the creativity that is sprouting.

I'm liking clean stuff: not boxy pullovers, but designs that show off shaping in a clean way, and where the details emerge from function to form unobtrusively.
I'd suggest you go to Interweave Press and Vogue Knitting and look up their latest Fall magazines. Both websites offer "previews" of their next issues.

Everybody around me seems to be knitting some sort of shawl/scarf. Semele, Enamored, Wingspan, Color Affection (don't understan this one), Wingspan, Leftie to just name a few. And, Madelinetosh Yarn looks like the yarn of choice at the moment.

I have all the scarves and hats that I need for myself, and I'm embarrassed to say here that I don't wear sweaters (I'm always too warm as it is!). I've been working on fun kids' hats this year. Some start with a pattern or hats that I've seen in pictures, but I prefer to make my own patterns, so that I can sell them guilt-free.
My newest toy is an Erlbacher-Gearhart sock knitting machine. It has a huge learning curve, but I have visions of proficiency by next spring! My first socks (when I actually get that far) will be for my dad. He's 81, has post-polio syndrome, and had a bout with squamous cell carcinoma last fall. The radiation he received has his body all out of whack. He's always cold now, and sleeps with socks on. I want to make him special wool socks to keep his tootsies toasty. I plan to use up all my old self-striping sock yarn, and clear the way for things that I like NOW. I can't wait to see the look on his face when I present him with those wild, crazy-colored socks.

I've been knitting a lot of scarves and shawlettes. I love the TGV pattern on Ravelry and have made it in several weights of yarn. Scarves seem to be in around here and I suspect we'll see a lot more once the temp is below 100 degrees for good. I like clean, uncomplicated patterns and have admired several with asymmetrical features. Altho, in my neck of the woods; if I made an asymmetrical cardi people would just think I flubbed up the pattern Classic designs are always good and are usually in fashion.

Cowls seem to be a big thing that keeps on going. Such a quick knit might be the reason... dress them up or down they keep you warm and don't get caught in your coat zipper!

I keep hearing about novelty yarns yet I don't see anybody knitting with novelty yarns around here. I live in Los Angeles, actually Venice Beach, California. Currently a lot of us are knitting the "Wingspan", it's a free pattern on Ravelry.

A friend just gave me one of these as a gift. Her sister makes them. I'd never heard of this kind of novelty yarn before (I think it's called Flounce) and I wouldn't have chosen this myself. But if you double the scarf and pull the ends through the loop, I think it looks pretty terrific tucked into the neck of a coat. |
