If you're an EZ fan and haven't yet read the Twist Collective articles about Sunday Holm's recreation of EZ's green sweater, you might enjoy the description of how Holm deconstructed EZ's design process. Joan Smith's recollections of EZ (as a person, not a knitting goddess) and the green sweater are here.

Oh, thank you, Suzanne!

I had read the piece in the online magazine, but had not seen this longer item.

I loved knowing that Sunday Holm had actually recreated it, and did I hear that Schoolhouse Press was going to publish a pattern when they could?

I hope so, and I hope Meg can find some green yarn.

Isn't it amazing how absolutely [i]right [/i ]the design of the sweater is?

Whadda woman EZ was!

Not only did she find green yarn -- but the same green yarn!!!

In her fall newsletter, Meg Swanson said:
"The 'Sherlock Holmes' person, Sunday Holm (really), did a splendid job of dissecting the EZ-Green-Mystery-Sweater and we have arranged to have it available as a pattern in the near future. And - I think I can break this news now: The mill who had spun and dyed the actual Green Sweater wool used by my mother just happens to have a batch of it lying around. It will not be re-dyed in future (unless someone orders a ton of it), so I have to say, 'limited supply.' But I think only 3 to 4 skeins are required, so we will have enough wool for many dozens of authentic sweaters. We will send an announcement to newsletter subscribers when the pattern and wool are available."

How cool is that?

That is a great story and a really interesting design. I hope it is published, as I'd love to try out the new-to-me construction.

I cannot wait to get a hold of that pattern, and I am so happy that Holm did the legwork and Meg Swanson is publishing the pattern. What a great work of preservation.

I just signed up for the newsletters so I won't miss the pattern's publication. It's a great story, with a happy ending.

I loved the article, and the sweater, too. And looking forward to its publication, for sure!

Just a heads-up that the EZ green sweater pattern has been released -- http://www.schoolhousepress.com/patterns.htm
The original wool already sold out, and they recommend Ultra Alpaca as a substitute. But I think I'd like to use a wool that will really last, not something too soft. Gauge is 5 st/inch. If you're planning to knit this, what yarn are you thinking of?

Thanks for letting us know, purlgin. I'd be fine with Ultra Alpaca, but since I have lots of Christmas knitting to finish, I'm can't even think about stashing for this project yet!

Thanks for the link. I just ordered the sweater and the ABC Surprise Jacket. My plan is to wrap them and put them under the tree for me, from DH. This lets him off the hook and I know I'll be happy. They'll be joining Jared Flood's new booklet, Made in Brooklyn, and some lovely Briar Rose yarn. My husband has such good taste;>)

Tree, that is a lovely idea. I usually just buy myself stuff throughout the season and not expect anything under the tree. My daughters sometimes surprise me, but DH just doesn't get into the "buying a gift because you're supposed to" thing. A few times, he's gone over the top - he once bought a nice nativity set and made the stable, complete with tiny handmade wooden shingles. Now, we both know that any structure of that time would have a thatched roof, and the stable may well have been a cave, but, hey, it was a really nice gift! Once, he located a Singer Featherweight sewing machine and surprised me with it. I'd been looking for a couple years, but the good ones were too expensive. Of course, then there's the years he forgot my birthday, our anniversary.... When I first started knitting, he got me a LYS gift certificate for $15....he's learned better, though. The next time he got me one, it was for $75. Sigh. I guess I'll keep him, but I'll probably just keep buying my own "gifts". I think I'll add the green sweater pattern to my list of things to buy myself.

Well, according to the latest Schoolhouse Press email, so many people wanted to re-create the EZ green sweater that they're having a new batch of the yarn prepared for this purpose. The website says details to follow.

They say on their website: "The wool is a single-strand and it may appear overspun (some doubling-back in the skein). ... The mill recommends winding the skein into a ball at least several days before casting-on, to allow the wool to 'settle down' (what a great mental image and fave Jon Stewart phrase). The wool feels a bit coarse while knitting, but softens and fulls beautifully after being washed - and wears amazingly well!"

I had put in an order early, (although I ordered another yarn--the DK weight wool/alpaca mix).
Yesterday I had an email that they had the new yarn to order, and they gave me a chance to get it, if I wished.

They said that they had had such a high response to the pattern and wool, that they were able to get more of the original wool dyed! Yay for knitters!

I love EZ, Schoolhouse Press, Meg, and everybody there--it is truly a family-run business! If you don't know the site, get familiar with it!

(Just a happy and long-time customer)
