I need to vent to people who will understand! While being able to finish socks, hats, baby clothes, lace shawls, and blankets, I am having severe sweater-finishing problems for myself. Unflattering sweaters, design not fitting yarn . . . so, I've been experimental for a couple of years... I accept the risks...
But now today I realized that my almost-finished Rogue (a cute worsted wool cabled hoodie, which I picked to break the curse of Poor Project Choice) is out of yarn! It's from a frogged sweater, and apparently along the process of knitting, frogging, and three different apartments in three years I'm about 150 yards short.
I have a really pretty sweater in pieces in my basket waiting for a free weekend for blocking and seaming. It appears to fit with some preliminary pinning and I've got a whole extra ball just for the seams but now I'm scared...
How do I break the curse?
Have a martini and lose Rogue's adorable cabled hood to have enough yarn for a second sleeve? Or, perhaps, my well-socked but non-sweatered man deserves a sweater...
Has anyone else gone through this?

We have all gone through it. It is part of the process of maturing as a knitter. Welcome to the club.
If you are interested in an opinion and being familiar with Rogue, I'd drop the hood and finish the sleeve. How could you give that up? I'd even go with shorter sleeves before giving it up.

Oh, yes. There's a nice sweater in my basket that just needs to have the underarms woven in. Don't like it now that it's finsihed. I'm sure when it gets a bit cooler I'll pull it out and finish and once I put it on with winter clothes I'll be happier with it. If not, I'll offer it to friends.
Do you have a group to knit with? I find my group inspires me to keep knitting. And they can offer opinions on fit.
Good luck with finishing.

Thank you for the encouragement and advice!
Fran, you are probably right. I love the hood but the rest of the design is so pretty too. I'll finish the second sleeve and think about how I want to make the collar. I definitely have enough for a second sleeve without the hood.
Linda, I'm looking for a knit group now. I think it would help when I'm tempted to FROG IT ALL!!

How would it be as a hooded vest?

It's not shaped quite right for a hooded vest, but it could be doable. I've made two Rogues and love them both. Might even make another one, it's such a great pattern!
What yarn are you using? An entire ball left should be plenty, I would think?

I thought about a hooded vest, but decided I wouldn't get as much use out of it as I would a sweater--which I would use a lot as my work is very cold, even in summer.
I'm using Cascade 220. Most of the yarn comes from a frogged sweater, so what's left for the sleeves is in several shorter pieces and I'm not sure how much there is.
I think what I will do is finish the sleeves, and see what is left over for a hood or collar. The other consideration is that I'm doing it as a cardigan, so I need a little for the front bands--I was planning attached I-cord.

Since it is Cascade 220, could you find more yarn online? Maybe try the Revelry stashes and see if someone has some. I think i'd go with the suggestions to finish the sleeves and forgo the hood. If you like the fit, you could always make another one. Good luck! Happy knitting!, claire |

| I thought it might be hopeless to get a matching dye lot as it's 5 year old yarn, but it wouldn't hurt to check Ravelry! I know I have some that old in my stash... |

I abandon a lot of almost finished projects. I realize that I don't like the sweater/socks/etc as much as I had hoped usually.
