Strolling through the new 'Sew Today' I came across a pattern for sewing and knitting totes. I ordered the pattern today, so I hope to receive it withing a few weeks from the UK. I think the patterns look great and they are a great way to use leftover fabrics.
Here's the pattern http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B5006=x&TI= 5006 &page=1

That's a great idea - very customizable too. Too bad I can't sew AT ALL.

Nice pattern. Hope you post a picture of yours when finished, archangelica.

@ azblueskies: I'm planning on doing so.
@ anderknit: maybe you can trade some knitting labour for sewing labour with a local sewing friend? |

I bought this pattern this morning! I think while I am making the tote bag, I will look for a way to divide the tote into sections on the inside, to hold small works in progress. I really like the the circular needle holder.

(edited to update signature) This is one excellent-looking pattern. I like everything about it (but would also add inside compartments).
The pattern is also available on ebay. The link is waaaay too long to paste here, but if you put Butterick 5006 in the search box, you'll see two listings (one an auction, one a Buy It Now for $6.64). There's another listing, too, but it's for a pattern for a woman's jacket and dress.
I think I'll put this pattern on my list for the next time Joann's has the Butterick patterns on sale. Not that I need another bag pattern...
Thanks!

I didn't even know Butterick was still around! I used to use their patterns exclusively back in the days when I made my own clothes and sewed for others. Now I mostly sew bags and quilts. I like that needle holder for circs...might make a nice gift next Christmas. I may have to order the pattern, too.

You really started something, Archangelica!
I'm going to check my local fabric shops to see if the pattern is available there. All the components are really good looking - and look very functional as well.
Thanks for posting, RoseM p.s. I used to use Butterick for clothes back in the day too. They were kind of like the poor man's Vogue Pattern. |

Butterick is owned by Vogue, as is McCalls. But any fabric store that carries "the big 2" companies should have that pattern. There were several at the store I went to today.

This is the pattern I picked out last week!! My step-mom can sew like a high paid seamstress (she has tried to teach me, but to no avail LOL), and I asked her to make me one! She was excited to have a project to work on. We are making a 1 hour trek next week to check out the pattern and buy some fabric/notions!! I can't wait until she can get started on it....
It's funny, I don't "get" sewing, and she can't understand how anyone can knit/crochet!! I am going to have to make her something nice for making me the knitting bag with matching needle roll!!

| I love those labour trade deals! And as far as talents, I sew and knit but I never 'got' crochet. Every few years I try but I always end up with a too tight knot ;D |

I just bid on the pattern on Ebay! I looked for it yesterday at the fabric/yarn store but they were out... You are all such enablers! Robin C. |

Mmmmm. Pockets! You just can't have too many pockets in a bag -- especially odd-sized pockets that will magically hold that one item that is *always* getting lost in the depths of the main compartment...

Well, my step-mom and I made the trek to Jo-Ann (about an hour away) to buy the pattern and fabric!!! (that was the closest place to here that sells Butterick, and about the only good fabric you can get here in Paducah is fat quarters anymore)...I picked out a beautiful deep red with gold pattern jaquard for the main fabric, and a matching deep red for the contrast fabric!!! I simply cannot wait until I get my projects in it!! Now I have to think of something that she'd love me to knit or crochet for her!! LOL...I'm thinking maybe a lapghan (she is constantly hot, and I don't think she'd need a sweater, hat, or any of those type things).

The possibilities are endless! I'm going to have to get that pattern, as well. What a shame Wal-mart doesn't sell Butterick patterns.
I'm sure Jo-Ann's, Michaels, or Hobby-Lobby have it. And, I have a 40 percent off coupon as well.
