(I was going to title this "knitting in movies," but I realized people would think it was about knitting while watching movies.) Years ago I saw a French film whose name I can't remember -- in fact, I can't remember much about it except that the female lead was always knitting. If I remember correctly, no mention was ever made of her knitting, but as the movie progressed every imporatant male character -- the old boyfriend, the new boyfriend, the mailman, the butcher, etc. -- eventually showed up wearing one of her identical sweaters. Does anyone here remember the movie, and can you help me identify it? Thanks! --Jackie |

I was JUST thinking of posting something along these lines last night! Mindreader you are! I was watching "Raising Helen," and the Joan Cusack was knitting in it. Someone rang the doorbell and she asked her husband who could it be? He said "Maybe it's someone coming to knit with you!" totally tongue in cheek. SO reminded me of my husband. Then my next movie I watched (I was laying low...) was "Love Comes Softly" on Hallmark. The wife and little girl were both knitting, and the mom was teaching the little girl. I thought it was funny because they were knitting English. Joan Cusack was just holding needles, not sure which wrap method she used...

| I was watching criminal minds (I think that was it) this past wednesday night and the character that is the computer whiz and does the researching on the suspects, etc., was doing this while knitting, I think she was knitting English - I am noting this more and more in movies, sitcoms, etc |

Awalka: Thank you for bringing that up. Garcia is her name or at least that is what they call her I for the life of me I couldn't recall on which program I saw knitting. I, too think they are showing more and more knitters on programs. Making movies, etc. wastes a lot of time with the actors just sitting around waiting. Might as well do something creative. I always carry my knitting or needlepoint and a book. Never know when one needs to do something to pass the time. Take care. Beverley[:00]

Well, true, actors (and crew) often have a lot of down time during filming or stage productions and take up some quiet hobby that can occupy the time that they are not onstage or in front of the camera. However, if knitting doesn't fit or add anything to the character they are portraying, it should be left on the chair when they go to hit their marks. Although the actor may enjoy knitting, the character may not. I'm glad to see knitting more prevelant as a "younger person's" hobby, and there are tons of characters that could enjoy various forms of knitting (just look here), but I don't want to see it out there just because someone was in the middle of a row when his/her cue came up and he/she didn't want to put it down!

My Name is Earl-- I've seen a lot of knitting in quite a few of the episodes. It's usually in passing-- Earl's mom knits, then there were a couple of other girlfriends who knit as well.

Hey, what about Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She thinks her instructions got crossed with another character's plans for a ranch house, so she "might possibly be knitting a ranch house!" I love it. It's my favorite movie with my favorite actress.

My favorite actress, Sophie Thompson, knits gloves as piecework at home, with all her sisters in the movie called "Lugnasa". I love that movie.

What about "Like Water for Chocolate," and that gloriously long scarf/shawl that the lead female/narrator knits from a broken heart?

Minh -- I bet you're right! I requested the movie from my library, so when I get it I'll let you know if it's the one I'm thinking of -- but the date is about right, and the picture on the cover looks familiar -- or rather, it looks like she's wearing a hand-knit sweater! Thanks so much!
In other knitting-on-screen notes - I was watching an old Northern Exposure tonight. Marilyn was always knititng, but in this one Maggie was knitting too.

Many years ago (20?) Helen Hayes was in a popular Broadway play. A drama I believe. She decided to enhance her character by knitting on stage in several scenes. I remember it because it was not the In thing to do and she was asked about it often. Yes she was really knitting. Yes it was a scarf. Yes it is the same one every night. Yes, she can knit and remember her lines. And yes, it has gotten way to long. She had a good laugh over all the attention it was getting!

| I recently watched an old Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy movie called "State of the Union." There's a wonderful scene with Hepburn knitting on an airplane while Tracy, as the pilot, is flying acrobatic stunts. I kept trying to imagine how you could knit while sitting in a plane doing loops, dives, and rolls. It was really funny. |

Myrna Loy knits in a couple of the Thin Man movies. The Women is a terrific movie --with knitting scenes-- there's not one man in it from start to finish. They're mentioned often enough, but never seen.
Jackie, when I started reading your post, I thought you meant A Tale of Two Cities! As I read further, I realized it couldn't possibly be. But that's another "French" film with a character knitting all the way through it. Just a bit older than the one you spoke of! ;-}

Any silent film buffs out there? I've seen The Bat, made about 1927, which supposedly gave Bob Kane the inspiration for Batman. (The Bat in this movie was a bad guy, but the costume, the bat signal, climbing on top of buildings, etc. are all there.) There's a character who solves the mystery and she is always knitting. I think you may never even see her eyes because they're always looking at her work. Fun movie; I haven't seen it in a while so I should pull it out and watch it again. I love to see people knit in movies.
