It's probably both a connection to the creative aspects and to the obscurely mathematically logical aspects...
We could put a show together and call it the Knitters Revue!

Amateur cellist. Another blogger and I have discussed the music-knitting connections -- she is a clarinetist. I found with both that when I miss playing/knitting, it is often muscle memory in my hands -- an urge in my hands -- that drives me to go back. Robbyn and I have also discussed how the rhythms of knitting and rhythms of music connect.

Wow this is really cool. I play blues harp and when no one is around I try to teach myself the trumpet. My DBF plays drums and all my brothers are musicians.

Just read through this for the first time. I'm a French hornist, I teach at a small college in Ohio and perform in several ensembles. I take my knitting to concerts for "wait" periods. It is very relaxing and takes my mind off the nerves!

I'm in training to become an opera singer- I think knitting is the perfect companion for a musician, because it is relaxing and focusing, which is so helpful before a performance. I've been known to keep knitting backstage, and I have actually knit onstage as well! I was Gretel in Hansel und Gretel, and I knit a stocking in the first scene- what fun!

| In rehearsal the other evening, during a lo-o-ong series of rests, I started thinking about how much counting I do in both music and knitting, and how relaxing that is; and then I lost count and came in wrong. Unfortunately, in music you can't frog. |

I think we should all meet up somewhere and make up a band of some sort...we could call ourselves the "purls of music." Just a thought!
I'm primarily a flutist, but am actually considered a "woodwind specialist." Most of my professional jobs are in the theatre - the pit, that is, and I end up playing flute, clarinet and sax. I've been playing piano since age 5 and still play and teach privately. I teach piano, voice, flute, clarinet and sax privately. I put the kids together for recitals in small ensembles. My piano kids accompany the instrumental kids. When I had several string kids, we had a string quartet. I love all the instruments! I minored in strings (string bass) because my dream at the time was to become an orchestral conductor.
That has been sidelined as I'm working as a specialist with Marching Bands - those of you with kids involved know how much money is made Marching. Amazing.
Anyway, I do teach privately and on occasion have to tell a kid or his parents that I won't teach them anymore - always due to a stinking attitude towards me or the process of learning music.
I do find many correlations between the two and have taught a few of my students to knit and crochet. We have to practice our stitches just as we have to practice our music.
Knitting is great in the pit - keeps the hands warm because often the pit is so very cold. And it's quiet - and I can still follow the show while doing something productive during those tacet segments.
I'm starting to work on my Master's degree in Music Ed. brought on by a job offer at a local University that liked me because of my judging - I'm asked to judge competitions a LOT. I was humbled and pleased, and then they said, "you do have your Master's Degree, don't you?" So of course, I have to get one now!
I also do a lot of recording and play "around" wherever I'm asked - have been to Chicago and NY often and since I grew up in the Washington, DC area, I still play there often.
I moved here to Raleigh because I like the proximity to the airport - and it used to be a smaller town, now I'm ready to move AWAY. I like a more rural atmosphere myself, but I need to be close enough to a larger town to do the required shopping, etc.
This is a neat thread and a great topic - so glad to see that there are so many musicians out there! |

I decided to learn how to play the piano a little over a year ago and I've always loved to sing, but none of the above have ever been a profession. Just school and church choirs for the singing and my home for the piano...but it is fun!

Currently I am doing more teaching of music than playing. I teach band at several private elementary schools to 4th through 8th graders. I also have a private studio of mainly piano students under the age of 10. I used to play string bass and trumpet in a group, but have since moved and have not found a new group to play with.
The connection I see between knitting and music is that they both require "practice" time. The more time you spend the better you are. People that have not spent this time have little understanding of what it "takes".
Right now I am working on Country socks from Folk Socks and they use a k5 p3 rib which drives me nuts because it's not even. This could just be my personality, but I compare it to meter changes in music and blame that on why it bothers me.

| I was in concert and show choir for three years in high school, and sing a bit at church. Otherwise, I do very little that is musical anymore, with the exception of my student teaching. I'm not a music major, but an early childhood education major. I sing and chant a lot with the groups i have taught, and often write "piggy back" songs for my various classes. (You should hear my song about Freud, if I can find it) |

I played the clarinet and saxophone, tried to learn piano when i was 11, gave up in grade 2 because my woodwind training has me mastering the treble clef very well but when it comes to bass clef... mmmmm....
My piano teacher nearly torn her hair out..

I dreamt that I could play piano but when I wake up, I can't. My fingers are too stiff.
Well, I did attempted to learn up to grade 2 (pop) and sort of ended it when my late grandmother's condition deteroriate and when I started dating my ex. I appreciate music & melody in general.
I used to sing in church in the past, but not so much anymore. Lack of practice & training. |

Bachelor's and Master's in Music Ed, here. Taught middle school and high school choir for fourteen years. Also had a few private piano students for some time. Had to get get out of it. I could not stand the attitude towards the arts in schools today. If they have the money you can function fine, but will always expect the performing groups to be front line public relations tools for the administration. If money is tight, the arts are considered "frills" and are always on the top of the list to be cut. I was becoming a bit too frazzled.
Went back to college, (again) and finished certification in regular classroom education. I've spent the last eight years teaching middle school math, of all things. Music is again something that I enjoy, not what I'm forced to contend with every day. And no one is questioning if math is a "frill." |

Old thread here. Yea, "fiddler" refers to the instrument, not (as one person guessed) fiddling around with my knitting. I play "everything except brass" but I probably have the highest "percentile" on the violin. (Other stuff I may play better, but so do a lot of other people). Anyhow, I play well enough to be 2nd violin part in any non-paid group. I also sing in church choirs, not because my voice is good, but I learn parts fast, and can improvise a harmony on the spot. I'm TRYING to learn musical saw, but having a problem with arm strength, fatigue and practicing time.
Oh yea, practice time. Two grade-school kids now. I took up knitting a couple years ago as something satisfying to do after "bedtime".
And I'm involved in "filk" -- participatory music as done in the science fiction fan community. Interestingly, the actual performing is skewed towards males, but a lot of wives in the audience knit.

Hi,
I play the piano. My favorite pieces to play are American standards, like Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Harold Arlen, and Cole Porter. Anyone else enjoy the music of these composers / songwriters?
