Both! A diagram can be helpful, and written instructions can be helpful, too. But for something complicated like lace, I want both.

I wasn't certain whether the question using "rocks" my boat meant that I liked or did not like one or the other. If "floats" my boat, then chart me every time! Reading charts is akin to reading music, and far easier to follow than all those commas and potentially misinterpreted pieces of punctuation.
