I am confused on when I knit the 2nd row. I did a machine cast on taking the carriage from LEFT to RIGHT. Then, I added the weight bar. THen, I moved the pins that were staggered to a single line in the middle. RIGHT? Then, once I slide the carriage across from RIGHT to LEFT,and RIGHT to LEFT, I end up with not two rows, but loose string.
Please help! I can't knit a row let alone THINK about a sweater!
Thanks so much! Frustrated with this thing and all the fools on youtube with ZERO information! Jill in Los ANgeles
Sounds like you are doing your cast on correctly, so there's something you're doing that I'm not "seeing". It could be a setting on the carriage. It could be tension related... could be many things. Take a deep breath, check each step carefully with your instruction book and give it another try. I totally understand where you're at. I spent weeks trying to teach myself how to use my new machine and got so frustrated I was ready to toss it out the window. What saved me was finding a local experienced machine knitter. One hour watching her and asking questions I realized my biggest problem was too much back tension from my ball of yarn! I've never looked back - love machine knitting. It's a fantastic complement to hand knitting.
Also - I see you're inb LA. Check out Newton's in Anaheim - they often have classes and workshops and would probably arrange a couple of private lessons. And they have a great inventory of coned yarns great for machine knitting.
