Japanese knitting needle sizes are different from the US sizes, UK sizes, etc.

I am traveling to Japan this spring (yay!) and the question is 'should I buy a few pairs of needles in Japanese sizes while I am there?'. I guess the question is really if one can get gauge for japanese knitting patterns with other needle sizes.

For the most part my answer is yes (for example, I use Addi needles whose sizes are not always the same as US sizes). For those of you who knit Japanese Patterns, have you had trouble getting gauge with non-Japanese needle sizes?
