I was looking at Amazon's top knitting books today and was struck by how many offered one-skein projects. I started thinking...hmm, there's all this focus on one-skein projects, but no focus on the skein itself. Even if you breeze through the project, why not do it in something truly memorable?
So I pulled together my list of eight truly remarkable yarns that would be deserving of a one-skein project - and that's the focus of this week's Knitter's Review. Here's the link.

What a list! I've worked with a few of the yarns, and now I want to try them all!
The only yarn I can add is Gobi from Bijou Spun, a blend of yak and camel down. I was given a gift of one precious 160 yard skein, and when the holiday knitting is finished it will become something just for me!

Clara, I'm so glad you wrote about the place I've been living lately - the Land of OneSkein ... forgive the following rhapsodizing ...
Yikes, you let out the secret about Briar Rose Glory Days ... I hope y'all leave some for me. In perspective: it breaks down to $7 per 100 yds. (Then again, I have been - ummmm - "collecting" and knitting it with passionate delight, as a few of you know.) One skein has produced mitts, a cabled beret and a cowl - and I still have enough for another project.
Besides Nona, Spirit Trail Sunna is high atop my list of must-knit yarns. Its weight makes it appropriate for most anything that calls for a sock yarn, the yardage is generous enough for a one-skein project, and it is the most fluid thing I've ever knitted with.
In the instant-gratification category, you can't beat Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande and its twin, Misti Alpaca Chunky. You can get a really smooshy, warm one-skein cowl out of them.

Not to toot my own horn...well okay-maybe a bit of a toot-Scarlet Fleece line of hand dyed luxury yarns has several notable one skein worthy yarns including Trinity Lace (800 yards of Corriedale,cashmere, silk blend), Ewe Silky Thing (formally Silk & Ivory-a 200 yd silk/merino dk weight) and Impressions-a thick and thin bulky wool. Now there are several 1 skein patterns to choose from-many of which are free down-loads on Ravelry. Here is the link-perhaps a pattern might help with a Christmas gift for someone looking for a lovely but quick project.

Mmmmm, some of those skeins sound so delicious! Unfortunately (or not, depending on how you look at it), they aren't so easy to get over here but when something special does come my way, and I have a little spare cash available, I try to allow a skein to come home with me. That is why I have a beautifully soft ball of Filatura di Crosa Superior (70% cashmere, 30% silk) in my stash handy enough to pet when needed. At 300 m (328 yd) it's enough for a soft, snuggly scarf to wrap around my neck - when I'm ready to put it on the needles.
I was also fortunate enough to be able to find (and afford) a single skein of Alchemy Haiku (40% silk, 60% mohair) when there was a craft fair from Australia visiting recently. At 325 yds this also will make a lovely soft scarf someday.
Are "special" yarns always soft and/or shiny and/or glittery? Mine seem to be.

and drapey, KathyR! so they flow across your body like a summer breeze. And I'm glad Lanea mentioned Great Northern Yarns. Their mink skein is big enough to make an elegant scarf - just the right length for wearing with your dress coat. and it's pure pleasure to knit with.
good thing I'm so sedate about my yarn purchases.

I loved working with the Great Northern Cashmere / Mink yarn, too. Knit a beautiful moebius for a friend, as well as a couple of pairs of fingerless mitts (the mitts were a skein for a pair, but I used two skeins for the moebius).

Your Mooi shawl is beautiful, Pat--I've been eyeing that yarn at my lys, thinking I needed to invest in enough (like 3, gulp) for a project. The one-skein route perfectly solves that problem--it can go on my wishlist.
