Does it make a difference re gauge between both techniques? I have a hat pattern that recommends twisted stitches (ktb,ptb)for stitch definition but I'd prefer color definition & a smooth (stockinette) fabric. Any and all advice gratefully appreciated!

Yes, it definitely makes a difference depending on the yarn and needle sizes used. Do your gauge swatch in regular stockinette and then double check the size of your hat using that gauge. However, if you get the same gauge in stockinette as recommended for the hat, it should make no difference.

| In my experience, the twisted sts make the rib "tighter" and if the pattern calls for them I would make sure, like Fran says, that your gauge is the same for twisted and non-twisted. |

The hat I will be making is the Mary Tyler Moore hat - I downloaded the pattern from Ravelry for a dear friend who is going thru a horrific divorce, with a 4 y/o no less. I love her dearly & want to do this right so I will follow all your suggestions bcz I really think she's gonna make it after all! Please pray for Sarah.
