I'd like to get a digital camera, but since I still want to use a film SLR for my regular pictures, it'd just be for doing knitting shots and stuff. So I have a reallllly low budget. What is the absolute minimum you can get away with and still get halfway-decent knitting pix?

If you only want pictures for a blog, and still want to continue using film, I'd just get my pictures developed on disk, so you can upload them that way.

I'll chime on board with recommending the Canon A series too. They have great user interfaces, so they are easy to figure out, good software for transferring to the computer, and they are flexible enough that you can use the Auto setting or make the camera completely manual depending on your comfort level with that.
I have an A65, and want to upgrade to the A95 when $$ allows. They are fantastic cameras.
Also, let me advise you to get rechargeable batteries and a charger. I have two sets of batteries and I rotate them so one is always in the camera. Both sets and the charger set me back about $40 -- much cheaper (and more environmentally friendly!) than buying new all the time.

Rebecca, maybe try out the small new Sony's. I forget how much they are exactly but my niece has one, and it takes great pictures. She loves her little camera.
