Has anyone here tried crocheting the "Fun in the Sun" hat from p. 84 of the Spring 07 Interweave Crochet?
I want to make it for my visit to Atlantic City next week, but can't get past the new (to me) cast on. It's called an Adjustable Loop and I will post only the part of the instructions that I can't follow.
"Place slipknot on hook, leaving a 4" tail. Wrap this tail around your fingers to form a lp. Work sts of first rnd into the lp on fingers. At the end of the first rnd, pull tail to tighten lp."
Okay, huh?
What am I doing here? I put my slip knot on my hook, I wrapped the 4 inch tail around my finger to form a loop. Here is the problem. Should it be a loose loop or should I have crocheted the first stitches into sort of a bunched up group of the tail. Does anyone understand my confusion. Then when I get the stitches made, how do I get it off my finger without messing it up?
Perhaps I'm missing something here.

The reason for using that caston is so you can pull the loop closed instead of having an open ring. If you don't mind the little open circle you can use your regular caston.
This tutorial on the Adjustable Loop might make it easier to understand. It's actually a good tip for crocheters: Adjustable Loop

GFTC,
Thanks for pointing me towards that tutorial. It's just what I needed. I'm going to go try it out now.
As for preferences, I'm not wed to my regular cast on. I love trying and learning new techniques ... I just had real trouble getting this one into my brain. It happened to me with I-cord as well, I had no one to show me how to make it and it took nearly a month of reading on the web to figure it out.
