Hi All,
Ok, I'm charting out a Lace pattern right now but I have a question. I have one of the free knitting symbols (I think it's the Aire or something) font and am using Excel. Now I'm starting from the bottom up like I'm supposed to, but have 7 lines charted out and I realized something...
I charted it out going from Left To Right, just like we read, however, when we read lace charts it's from the Right to the Left (backwards)...
So, will this be a problem? I just don't want to re-do all the work I've already done.
The Even rows are just Purl, so I don't have to worry about htat.

It will be a big problem, I think. The concept of charting from right to left is because that's how knitting is done...right to left across the needle. It's not about reading, it's about knitting. You'd be asking people to go against they way they traditionally knit just because you made a mistake and you don't want to do it over. I'm a left-handed knitters who knits left to right, but I'm so used to working a chart from right to left that even I would struggle with a pattern that was written backwards.
I do my own charts using a knitting font and Excel and I know it's tedious, but if you plan on offering your patterns to other knitters, especially for sale, then the pattern needs to be compatible with the way knitters expect the pattern to be.

It defintely needs to be designed from right to left.
You don't want to cause your knitters any confusion that could have been avoided...
One question for you: Are you planning on including the written, row-by-row instructions in your pattern also?
I'm debating whether to present my patterns as just charts (which I too do in Excel) or as charts with written instructions too.

Butting in to say that I'm used to working from charts and have come to prefer them, but a couple of weeks ago someone posted this sock pattern written with row-by-row instructions that included boxes to be checked off as each row is completed. Brilliant[!], I think, and could also be incorporated into a chart.
