Obviously writing up a pattern often includes drawing up a chart for cables or lace or colourwork. What do you use to do this? Do you use specific software, just regular word processing software, or do you draw it out by hand and scan? What do you find works well?
I just drew up my first chart by making a table in Word, but of course it doesn't include knitting symbols so for some stitches I just picked something that looked appropriate.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.
thanks, tatjana

There are downloadable knitting fronts through xrx but they're hard to find. It takes some website searching.
I like Excel, personally. I'm currently designing a baby jacket and I'm graphing the back motif using Excel.

I use Adobe Illustrator. I'm not sure how user friendly that would be to someone who hasn't had a lot of experience with it though. It's not a simple program to learn, but it allows me to create my own symbols and everything from scratch so I can make them look exactly how I want them. If you have some money for the program, and the patience to figure it out it's totally worth it.

I use Stitch & Motif Maker though for schematics for wraps, I draw my own. Certain shapes just can't be easily executed in S&MM so I resort to hand-drawing. Jane http://www.janethornley.com/journal_knitters.php

Thanks so much for the help! Just to be practical, I'll see how I manage with the free font options for now, because I don't know how far things will develop yet. But I can imagine Illustrator would be good not only for charts, but also garment diagrams, which is another thing I'm not happy with. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so even when providing a free pattern on my own site, I would like to be able to make it look professional. At any rate, it's good practice for when I submit my work somewhere :)
Anyway, it's great to have you all here to discuss things like this. You guys rock!! :D

I've been working with Word a little bit (by creating a table) and find it easy to create the chart but cannot figure out how to get it to number up the side. Anyone able to do this?

Can you just include an extra column in the table and type the numbers in it? Maybe make them bold?
A lot of people use Excel. There's a Yahoo group devoted to charting lace and in their fiels they have an Excel template with the Aire River font.

Yep, Anita, that's what I think I'll have to do..... I charted in Excel but I can't seem to screen the colors and the lines/individual cells disappear. And there doesn't seem to be any Mac-friendly software, not that I know of....
Thanks, Barbara
