Hi,
I imagine there are other new spinners using Spinner Central, and I was wondering if you are trying spindles as well as wheels. I just got a Babe spindle (after using a wheel for all of 2 weeks!). The Babe seemed a good way to start, since 1) it's really cheap, 2) it comes with two whorls so you can change the weight, and 2) you can change it from a bottom-whorl to a top-whorl. I am going to draft some of my wool roving as thin as I can, and take off one of the whorls, and see if I can get some finer yarn.

I'm not a newbie anymore (I guess I'm a yearling now), but I can tell you that I got a lot of support from KR Spinner Central when I started.

I learned to spindle in August. One day I want a wheel, but since I have no cash (I'm a poor student) and a tiny little flat it's just not possible now.
But, I can spin fast enough on a spindle to keep happy.

I learnded to spindle spin in about July and got a wheel in October. The people here on KR have been really helpful and going to the retreat and learning from many of them first hand probably advanced my skills by at least 6 months in 1 weekend. I never did learn how to spin on the spindle without parking and drafting, the wheel is so much easier for me.

I bought my second spindle at Rhinebeck in mid-October (the first one was terrible), and I'm getting a wheel for Christmas. The spindle never really took for me; I have made a bit of yarn with it, but I feel much more comfortable on a wheel. Others are exactly the opposite, though!

I never thought I would be interested in spindling, but once I tried it, I'm hooked (oops, a pun). But it is also very frustrating. I want to do it NOW, and while my first attempts this morning were surprisingly successful (with a lot of parking and wrapping), this evening looks more like Charlie Chaplin trying to spin. I am going to go back to the wheel tonight, but I really have to find someone to teach me to use the spindle. I really envy you the KR Retreat!

I don't qualify for newbie status yet, as I haven't actually started spinning, but I asked DH for a spindle and some spinning books for Christmas. I can'y *wait* to try it out!! I've been reading through the old threads on Spinner Central and they have been very informative, so I thank you all for the wonderful help! Hopefully I will be able to figure it out, and eventually move on to a wheel.

I have been using a spindle since April of 2005 when I bought my first spindle and roving. I hated it at first because I didn't get it. But now I am hooked. I have a Louet spindle (my first), and an Ashford; very basic models. I have 4 homemade spindles that are CD spindles which I use for plying.
I wanted to learn how to use the spindle so I can have better control of my drafting and understand the concept of the drafting zone and twist. I love it, and can't wait to get my spinning wheel.

Hi all. I started spinning yesterday and I'm so amazingly in love with it! I was so surprised at how fast and how fun it was. The only downside is that I've used all the roving I had and have no money for more at the moment, so I'm going to have to be Very Patient. [:00]
I'll be attending a spinning workshop in late January and I think the guest spinner is bring luxury roving in for us to play with and buy. Definitely looking forward to that. |

I keep telling myself how much cheaper roving is than commercial yarn. I am a bit frustrated with the spindle and doing better with the wheel, but I do love the feeling of using the spindle. I will just have to keep at it.

Caitlin and others - do consider getting a spindle video. Copper Moose makes one that is interesting and good, though for technique, I think the Melba Montgomery one is better. Amazon dot com sells it as well as many fiber vendors.

Rob,
You also have an infinite number of possibilities with roving, top, rolags, punis and locks. Blending! You can't get these in any old yarn store.

Frannybee, welcome to the addiction called spinning. I took a spinning 3 day class to learn to spin, and it's all been downhill (or uphill, depending on how you look at it!) since then.
