I recently purchased some laceweight yarn from handpaintedyarn.com, and I found that I wanted it even more colourful than it was, so I over-dyed some of it with food colouring. Just the cheap bottled stuff, of which I own 2 colours - red and blue.
The before and after pics can be seen here.

You're talking about the food coloring that you use to color icing/frosting?
It's beautiful! I prefer your colors much more than the original!

Jackie, it truly is easy. It takes a certain level of fearlessness far more than skill. Start with cheap stuff that you don't care that much about, and start playing.
It makes it so much easier to buy stuff on sale, if you don't have to find the perfect colour. If all else fails, I get off-white. However, food colouring only works on protein fibres - wool, mohair, alpaca, etc. Not on cottom or acrylic.

Well, you're outta luck, what I've got is already spoken. However, if you want to order some of your own, and have it sent to me, I'd be happy to play with colours for you. And I promise I'll send it on to yuu . . most of it . . . eventually.
Thanky you all for the compliments. I still think it's funny that the only complaint I've ever read about them is that there's too much variance in the colours, and I didn't think there was enough.

I LIKE what you did! Your after photos are MUCH better than the before.I would be disappointed, too, if that's what I got. Again, you are brave. Do you have any of those brave pills you can send me??

Barbara:
They look terrific, I especially like the pink/blue yarn. What technique do you use with food coloring? Do you need to heat or dilute? I know of kool aid, but didn't know about food coloring.

Hollis, I use exactly the same technique for FC as for KA, except that I"m more careful about adding vinegar, since FC has no citric acid.
I use the microwave method. As for diluting, that depends on how strong yo want the colour. The stuff in the bottle is already diluted. Of course, you can always add more colour, although I find that I'm rinsing a lot out - have you noticed that I like colour?
