In this movie with Cary Grant, Jean Arthur is quietly knitting away in a rocking chair while the law professor and the fugitive are playing chess by the fireplace.
I think she was knitting a sweater out of white wool.
There's a knitter in "I Was A Male War Bride". Cary plays a Frenchman married to a WAC who has trouble getting to the US. He goes into a "foriegn spouse" hotel and talks to the clerk who was knitting and then winds some yarn. Cary, ever the gentleman, holds the yarn so the clerk can wind it into a ball. Of course I'd watch any Cary Grant movie but when he's in the scene with yarn, ooooh be still my heart.
