So tonight I am driving home and listening to my favorite Public Radio station, which is reporting on the University of Massachusetts at Amherst's acheiving a diverse freshman student population this year.
A representative from UMass gushes: (I paraphrase here) "We even have a young lady who was accepted because of her participation in varsity knitting. She mentions it several times in her personal statement!"
And he goes on further about diversity.
Now what is varsity knitting? Any of you out there hear about this?
And is this what one would call an aspect of diversity?

Clever girl to use knitting to further her academic career! I have no idea what varsity knitting is, but I wish I had thought of it when I was in school.

Varsity knitting? Never heard of it, but wish I had been a knitter in college!

They give degrees in knitting (probably fiber arts, but who's quibbling?) in Norway; my DSD had a tenant who had her master's in it.

Years ago, I used to tell people that my favorite sport was Full Contact Knitting. They usually backed away slowly with a kind of "heh heh ... that's interesting ..." and a look like "who IS this crazy woman?"
Then, this year, we had Olympic Knitting (which I didn't find out about until too late, or I'd have been there, baby). And now I hear that there's Varsity Knitting. So .... turns out I wasn't so crazy after all.
Knitting IS a sport. I'm glad that people are finally beginning to see that! |

Great article Sher, thanks for passing that on. Sometimes one forgets one is in the 21st century and one can call up info with a few mouse clicks.
Only the article didnt't say anything about varsity knitting, per se.
So the question is still out there: what is varsity knitting and where is it being, er, played?

I just did a further search on google, then ask.com, then wikipedia - nothing!
I'm beginning to think that a leg has been pulled at the U of Mass.
