I bought some non-mercerized cotton at the local yarn store. It is red. it is bleeding like I've never seen cotton bleed before. I soaked it in cold water. I soaked it in hot water. I've soaked it in cold water with vinegar and then in hot water with vinegar. I threw it through the washer and drier as hot as I could get it. I let it sit and dry for 5 days (the drier doesn't get super hot) and yet....it's still bleeding.
ARGGGGGGG!
No, I have no idea what dye was used and the brand is in Korean, so that's not going to help. Heck, the dyes are probably very different than most people are used to since rules about dyes are different from country to country.
This is supposed to be used in a baby jacket for a new mom and while I know she'll be happy it's technically machine washable, I would hate to turn her whole wash pink.
Is there a trick to setting cotton? Is there a temperature trick in using the vinegar?
I don't have access to anything from Dharma, I don't have access to those "dye catchers." I have no oven and no microwave, only a two-burner range.
I am using vinegar with grains on the label (as opposed to apples) that, as a side note, reads "Your heart will beat with delight from its high quality." I bought 1.8 L for $1, so I am more than willing to use as much as I need to if that's the problem. I sort of have access to measuring cups. Sort of.
I am about to scream.
Please help me.
What in the world can I do?
To further my concerns, I bought blue in the same brand! I love the yarn, love the sweater but HELP!! I have tried Googling variations of "cotton bleeding" but I keep getting things about stopping real body bleeding using cotton.

I'm having that problem with green cotton fleece seconds (I whined about this yarn a few weeks ago). Lanea, where do you buy Retayne? Can I get it at Michaels or AC Moore, or do I have to buy it online?
Amanda, just think of the bragging rights you will have at using "local" yarns when you finally get this under control!

Ok, I know nothing about cotton dyes and such. I just had to say that when I read the subject line, my first thought was "tourniquet." I'm in a bit of a cheeky mood.

I thought band aid w/ 1x1 gauze squares... hehe. Maybe make a swatch and boil it? I have no clue if that would help...might get it to bleed until it's um, bled to death and can't bleed anymore? Good luck!!

You can try soda ash, too.
Or it could just have too much dye, and been not rinsed enough in the factory. Dyes for cotton don't discharge the way woolen dyes do and there's always a lot of dye going down the drain.
Soak it in salt water - a cup of salt to a gallon of water. Then wash it with detergent and rinse under running water until it's clear. It might be a LOT of rinsing if there's excess dye.

See, salt is helpful in setting dyes when you're dyeing the fabric, but I don't think it's any more helpful than plain water in this instance.
Retayne is a dye fixative, as is soda ash. Dharma also has its own brand of dye fixative (called Dharma Dye Fixer, of course). Synthaprol is a detergent that is supposed to prepare fabric for dyeing and to help remove excess dye after the dye process is complete. With the amount of bleeding/crocking you're getting, I'd be worried that the dye in the yarn wasn't set correctly. Hence the dye fixer recommendation.
I think sending the yarn to your mom so that she can fix the dye is a good idea.
