The April 2 Sunday NY Times "Style" section had a full-page ad featuring a heavily cabled sweater based, sort of, on a fisherman's knit theme. The sweater is awesome (I think), really a neat twist on what can almost be a (beautiful and warm) cliche. How did the knitter get the cables to look so "bouffy" and drapey? Is it just knit to a looser gauge, or is it knit with something like the Rowan tape "yarn", or ...what? I'm curious to know but don't live close enough to Bergdorf's to investigate.

Hi, Well, I don't know if the NY Times archives its advertisements along with the articles on their website. Maybe Bergdorf's also has a website? It's the Fall 2006 Collection, 4th floor, according to the ad.

I saw that ad in NyTimes and went bonkers over it. I copied the picture and even checked out the Oscar de la Renta website. I'm planning to post this on my blog, probably today. I want to magnify the photo and analyze those cables. I shudder to think what the pricetag is.
This is on my " Bah, I can knit that for nothing!" list of future projects.
FYI: The post will be titled "Wretched Excess" with more $$$knitted/crochet/sheepy items from last weeks NYTimes.

OK, I just got off the phone with a really helpful woman at Bergdorf's. The sweater is 100% cashmere, handknit(we knew that already) and is $2250!!!
The silk brocade pants, show in ad, are only $1350.
Items can be reserved and will ship in mid-August.
I'm sure all of you will be placing your orders asap.
I'm updating the info on my blog today!
(And calculating what this would cost to knit in 100% cashmere, a cashmere blend and a non-cashmere yarn.)

Just posted pics on blog with a cable challenge. I don't know if I'm swift enough to chart this but I'm sure somebody out there can.
I remember a "Cables from Hell" pattern that I saw years ago in the back of VK and never got around to buying. I think that's haunting me when I look at this.

to be perfectly honest; to me it looks like it is made out of one of those hideous bobble bedspreads from the 50's

I think that's why I like it--the hypertexture. Besides, if I ever knitted this, it would be the last cabled thing ever!

Thanks for tracking this down. I'm looking at the newspaper photo with a magnifying glass... The collar and claw-cuffs on the website runway model don't look exactly like the photo in the ad. I wonder if the style got modified a little for the in-store sweater? I like the idea of the funky claw-like cuffs, but they would be dragging in the dish of clarified butter...

I went back and saw the difference as well. Obviously, toned down for retail. As for the 'cabled lobster claws,' I'd make a long pair of mittens with the thumb and hand parts coming to a clawlike point.(silly but fun) OR put pointy bits on the ends of the sleeves that could be folded back, for more refined butter dunking.
You guys may think I'm wacko, but I'm working up a swatch in some Furlana from the stash. If you saw my blog, you already know I have a thing for crawdads...lobsters are the next logical step!

O my! I'm a cable maniac and I just LOVE this sweater. I can't reverse engineer for beans, though. All I know is that the big loose cables are done over a hole lotta stitches, and crossed relatively infrequently. How's that for precision? I'll be watching your blog, Mary, to see what you come up with.

There appear to be 8 stitches in each side of the big flattened cable - with either two or three stitches of reverse stockinette on either side of that. The smaller cable appears to be pretty standard.

I think that the smaller cables are a basic braid with purl stitches in the centre to bring out the poofiness. Really, there are just 2 cables to the whole sweater. I think that it is very easy to reverse engineer.
What would chairs look like if our knees bent the other way? |

Also, if you google 'follow the leader aran knit a long", there are enough tutorials to explain how to design the sweater.
