I tried the norwegian purl, but my yarn wraps the wrong direction - is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem and would be able to tell me what I'm doing wrong?

No, it's not normal - or at least, I haven't had that problem.

It's very tough to explain, but let me see if I can describe what I do when I NP.

In knit, the yarn is in BACK of both needles, in ("standard") purl, it is in FRONT of both needles.

In Norwegian Purl, it is in back of the left hand needle, but in front of the right needle. The needle enters the stitch as normal (left to right) then swings over top of the stitch it's in, moving right, scoops up the yarn going under to the right, then pulls it back through the stitch.

I think - that's from memory. I'll go find knitting and see if I described it correctly, but can you maybe describe the way you're doing it?

There are two ways to wrap the yarn around the needle in any stitch - front to back and back to front. With NP, once you do everything that RoseByAny said and when you scoop the yarn up, push the right needle against the working yarn and wrap it from back to front and pull it through - with the new stitch on the needle, the left leg should be in back. If it's not, you wrapped/caught it the wrong way ... try again. Does that make sense? Does it help?

There's a video of NP on the KnittingHelp.com site. Perhaps it will help shed some light on the issue.

It's called "Norwegian Method".

There's also a Norwegian Purl Method PDF on IK's site. It's at the bottom of this page.

Hi Pink Dandelion,

I too get that everytime I try to purl that way.

I will try what both Barbara and I'll have a look at all the other things the other ladies have suggested.

Thank you for bringing it up.

Knit in peace and harmony.
