Yup. I started it today on a whim (partly thanks to Vi having brought up gardening. Everything is Vi's fault. )

Ever noticed that if you look at the word "green" long enough, it starts looking like it's spelled wrong?

I'll post some pictures of some stuff I did last year up soon, also a list of books and junk....
Of course the -along won't really start until spring, but starting now gives people plenty of time to research plants and plan out their gardens.

hmmmmmmmmmm I am thinking ( that is the stench you smell.....my brain cells smoking)
a lot of dye stuff grows just wild ( ok not the alkanet unless you are in europe) I think I already have a partial dye garden since a lot of what I do grow will dye with the right mordant... not that I KNOW what the right mordant is mind you but I do know it will
( do I get a cookie for being good???)

Yes, you get a yummy big fat chewy chocolate fudge cookie that my mom made. Actually, you get 2. And I'm sending you an invite to the dyer's blog, too.
(btw- most plants use alum & cream of tartar as a mordant)

Yup; tis the season to think gardening :}. I live in Clay County, Missouri. Sooooo aptly named. This year I'm doing raised beds, I'm sick of digging up clay balls the size of my head! I've fertilized, mulched, added compost, brought in a truck-load of black dirt............still lackluster plants. I appreciated the links you listed. Good reading.
Here's a couple of links you may be interested in; I like blue so I'd earmarked this before; http://my.net-link.net/2E/EB/rowan/crafts/woad/woadpage.html
And this is a medieval gardening site, might be of interest? http://www.labelle.org/act_garden.html

vi, rest assured that being responsible for everything that has happened is way less onerous than being responsible for everything that might happen, which rests squarely on my shoulders. It's the division of labor in my house....The Rock is responsible for what's happened, I for things that might. It's a reflection of my worrisome nature, which I am learning to direct more carefully.
I think I might want to do this too. It's time to think about planting in California, and that means that I can pick things that make color on wool.

All this time I thought it was all SallyJo's fault. You mean I should have been blaming Vi?

Hey, I jsut checked out the medieval garden site. Rather than flipping through the site, I snagged the data and dropped into Excel, that way we can sort on Dye. Let me know if anyone wants it!

I am interedested in joining. I have been playing with natural dyes a lot lately and I am getting ready to replant my front yard in native plants. I am trying to find as many native dye plants as I can for central California. Suggestions are welcome.
Check out the recent posts in my blog for my latest fiber and yarn dyeing.

Miss Maia, I too am interested in Central Cal plants, altho I am in SF bay area. Let me know what you find, so far it seems like most dye plants are eastern or plains plants.

Kelley,
I've been looking, but there really isn't much literature on California Natives as dye plants. I will certainly post whatever I learn.

I've never used anything as a mordant except alum, salt, or vinager - and the later two are actually more setting agents there is a technical difference. Alum is about the safest of the mordants - it is still used in some pickle recipes. The various metal mordants - tin, chrome, etc; while tending to give more vivid colours are also MUCH more posionous.

BTW - I have recently seen a couple sites claiming to get a non-fugitive red from beets - using the juice from raw grated beets,(mix with equal volume of water, let sit overnight and strain) salt AND alum as a mordant and *NOT* heat processing - long cold soak. One site claimed the dye struck faster if treated like "sun tea" but the other claimed the oppisete.
