I find animated smilie-type critters distracting. I just learned that if you press the esc key, the motion freezes. There don't appear to be any other side effects. I thought I'd share the information in hopes that any fellow-Grinches will find it useful too. |

This same key stops music if you go to a website that has music and you no longer want to hear it.

It also freezes flashing ads, which are ever so obnoxious. I think they could give just about anyone seizures, or at least a nasty migraine.

You can also use the red X on the top left hand corner of your browser. ;) That stops everything on the screen.

Hooray! An end to the ever-so-annoying animations!! Thank you so much - and thanks to you, too, Amie! I love music, but I really, really dislike sites that force music onto you.

Thank You!!!!! It never fails, Sunday afternoon, when DH is napping and I'm surfing around on the web, quiet, minding my own business..."POP UPS WITH MUSIC" as I race to finagle the mouse using the touch pad on my laptop, DH wakes up. I feel bad, he is grumpy, and to beat all, I accidentally clicked on the inside of the pop-up instead of the "X" to close, so 20 more came up. The Esc Key will save me stress!!!!
Month 2 of the no - new - yarn diet!!!! Plus month 2 of the no more soda diet, guess which one is going better? |

They are annoying for those of use with dial-up connections or are overseas, which is why the vast majority here don't use them. I tend to avoid reading posts from people whom I know use flashies and smileys. It would be very considerate of others if you did take them off.
It would also be appreciated that instead of including photos in your posts, you simply include a link to your blog where people can see them. Loading those huge bitmaps takes forever and it takes up disk space that Clara has to pay for.

Ack! It didn't work for The Big Yarn - I clicked on their link at the right of the forum, and music started blaring. You have to listen to loud music and watch an animation in order to get to their site - and you can't turn it off.

On the rare occasions when the esc key won't stop blinking and I still want to read what's on the page, I just hold paper up against the screen until I can scroll down and away from the blasted blinking.
I hate those blinking ads.

Just a suggestion--to get rid of the sound, could you turn off your speakers? I know that's easier on some computers than others, though.

So I guess I should scrap my plans to have marching-band music play whenever people browse the forums? I was also going to add a border of huge yellow and purple flashing smiley faces, too. Oh well...

I could, but I don't think I should have to. Having music suddenly blaring at you with no way to turn it off is obnoxious, and a guaranteed way to keep me and my $$ away from your site. Personal sites are one thing - people have a tendency to think that if one animation and a little bit of music is good, then many, many animations and lots of music must be better. IMO, though, people who are trying to get me to buy something should know better...

Yes, Clara, scrap those plans. I feel guilty enough for browsing during the workday even though I am just taking a break....drawing more attention could be ...ahem... problematic.
