A huge thanks to all for your input, right now we price every ball, but the info cards will still go up as planned, slightly larger text for those who cannot see very well, and in case we label over the info.
Which leads me to a funny story... When we opened this past spring, we were like... well, knitters with a huge private stash of new yarn! We ripped open boxes! We cuddled and petted and adored all the new balls of yarn! We played with all the gadgets and needles! We drooled over all the patterns!
One day, we got to work and printed out sheets and sheets of neat, small lables to be stuck onto the ball bands. And we labeled. And labeled. And you know what? After 2000 balls of yarn, the fun wears off. Still, we labeled. And it was not until a good 2 months later on our opening weekend that we spotted that we had labeled right over the free patterns on the back of all the tags of one type of yarn. And over the content of another's tag. And over the name of still another yarn.
(hopefully someone will chuckle over that, still makes me smile when I see those labels today! But only for a second, as I soon have to pick them all off...)

| My LYS has prices and yardage on cards over the cubby where the yarn is kept. That way you can quickly figure out how much you need and, therefore, what the total cost will be. |

One of my favourite LYS has a system that's perfect for me. The individual skeins are not priced, but next to every weight and brand, there's a beautiful sign stating price, yardage and recomended needles. Usually, there's also a small knitted sample next to every sort of yarn.
It works very well, so far I've never been able to leave that place without buying something.

My yarn store has a price tag on every skein of yarn. They also have laminated signs up to tell the name and the price of all the yarns. Being a newbie knitter I find it very easy to locate the yarns that I want.

I say let the LYS know that the lack of price tags is an issue! Fortunately, of the 2 LYSs near me, one prices every item individually; the other has yarn prices on card on the bins and prices on all patterns and tools.
Most states and provinces have laws that govern retail stores and pricing. In Massachusetts, every item must be priced, but that law doesn't apply to stores with less than $5 million dollars in annual sales. For those retailers, the prices must be displayed on the shelves. The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs will enforce this law if you let them know of a violation. And the fines are "per item", so it's in the LYS's best interest to fix this problem.
If I wandered into any shop that didn't post prices, I'd politely tell them that the lack of pricing makes it very difficult for me to decide whether nor not to purchase something and that I hope that they reconsider their "no price tag" policy, especially since it's a violation of local law. And on that, I'd leave.
It's not a convenience, it's a consumer rights issue. We have the right to see the price of an item clearly marked.

Mari, thanks so much for the info (I didn't know about the Massachusetts law, that's really interesting)! Next time I'm in that LYS, I'll follow your advice and talk politely to the owner about not having price tags.

Woolcott in Cambridge, MA used to have small swatches of yarns, and it was a big help to see what hte yarn looked like knitted up.

My fav LYS has a paper tag on the yarn cubby. Shows gauge, rec needle size and fibre. Just another reason I love em. Have been to others where you have to ask (what a hassle when you are considering many and the shop is busy) or it's written illegibly on the band.

| I agree that the price should be available without asking, but I prefer the posted yarn cards with the price rather than the price on the yarn label. I hate peeling the stickers off the label, and sometimes there is a residual gloopy spot. A store in Seattle called the Weaving Works sometimes pins a sample swatch of a yarn up along with the card -- this has sold me on more yarn than any other store's display. Sarah. |
