Yup, another business question...
Would any of you spinners be interested in a spindle made out of fine woods (such as cherry, walnut, aspen, etc.) which are handcrafted and woodburned and painted/stained by me, with celtic or elvish designs on the whorl, with a price range from about $25-45? (do those prices seem about right?)
The woods would be solid of course, no composites, and the shafts would be made of solid good dowels (not the cheap ones from Lowe's- I'm talking hardwoods here, like cherry and walnut [guess my favorite woods, lol]). They'd also be top whorl spindles with a hook.
The designs I have in mind (and in hand, actually) are variations of intricate traditional celtic knots which would go around the entire whorl, and round elvish shields designed by tolkien (very beautiful designs incorporating flowers and geometric shapes, these would be handpainted in edition to being woodburned).
I think this is a fairly unique idea. I've looked on some spindle sites (such as the woolery's spindle collection), and I've seen a lot of hand-turned, painted, cut out, carved and stamped spindles but nothing really like what I have in mind.
I know that there are some spindle collectors on this board, and would love to have some imput. I'm eager to start a small business and this seems a perfect one to start (and one that could lead into fibers/yarns, once I've enough money saved to start that).

Yes! Very definately would be interested. In fact, that is about the price range I am looking into, and a nice celtic knot would suit me well. Please let me know when you have some available. I would love to have one (or more, depending on what I can spend when you have them).

Once I get materials I can get things rolling. Not sure if I need a small business license to start an ebay store though?
And I'm lost for a name, very difficult to come up with a good one.

Very cool Sarah Elizabeth - I just love the celtic designs!
I'll bet that you could sell them to any of a dozen retailers who sell drop spindles... your prices are in the right range and the designs are gorgeous. go for it! Most small retailers would pay you about 20-30/spindle wholesale and then add on only about $5 each to retail them for you. There's a BIG market for drop spindles out there.
Oh, and by the way Lissa - I agree - of course you can learn to drop spindle.. try the turkish drop spindle first (its easiest!)
Drop spindling is addictive!
