I learned how to make beaded yarn yesterday. It looks really cool, I'll post a picture of it as soon as I can find my camera.
What I did was first spin a bobbin of combed...something, I can't remeber what it was, but the fibers were ridiculously long. So that made a really textured single.
Then I threaded about a hundred tiny silver beads onto a linen thread, and plied that onto the first yarn, spacing the beads about a foot apart. It took a lot of work, but I love how it turned out.

Sounds great! There's been a lot of talk about beaded yarn on some of the spinning-lists I'm on, and now I'm really curious to try too.

Lanthir,
I just posted images of a beaded yarn I made a few weeks ago.
It's on my blog. It was fun to make.

Thank you. I love making boucle. The process is great fun. I've only woven boucle (as weft) so far & am not so sure what I would knit out of it...
I think i'm going to stick to handspun singles to make beaded yarns. Much more even that way.

I feel more like a dilettante right this minute :( It's been a long time since I sat down & sunk my teeth into a good project. My warping reel arrived from ebay yesterday. I now have no excuse to not weave my friend the shawl I was supposed to have woven 6 months ago.
Maybe I'll spin some more beaded yarn to make it look more interesting *evil grin*

Beautiful yarn!

I recently bought beads to make my own, although I've blown it off for a few months. One thing I did do, though, was making sequined yarn.

Because the sequins have giant holes, it was easier to string and I could just thread the sequins directly onto one of my singles prior to plying. It was fun and pretty.

Manasi, I love you yarn. The blue beads on the red yarn are striking. Can you tell me about your scarves you wove. I'm a biginning weaver and need ideas. Do you ind if I pick your brain? You can answer via PM in you like. I don't want to hijack this thread.

Your work is beautiful!

vi,
i saw your blog & the cute alpacas!
I just finished blending some natural brown alpaca, tussah & cashmere & might make a beaded yarn from that too...the beads may have to be small since i dont want them to interfere too much with the softness of the yarn.
i might need a ton of beads tho',since i have abt 4.5oz of the blend.

I ended up selling the sequined yarn on Etsy. I couldn't think of anything I wanted to make with it -- mostly it was just the process of making the yarn I was interested in.

If I make beaded yarn, though, I'm using it.

PeskyMac,
i've been wanting to make some sequin yarn now. I have a friend who might use it. Beads are fun but take a long time to string. Choose the kind with larger holes & enjoy!

I wish I cd. see the yarn - sounds gorgeous.

Thanks for including your how-I-did its. Soon, I'll get to try it (got all the materials, just have to dig in ).

The Spin-Off issues of winter 2003 and spring 2004 have articles about beaded yarn too.
