The basic 4-ring cushion takes 100 yards (total) of Lamb's Pride Worsted. I've also used Wool of the Andes and Cascade 220.

Thanks for the pattern link. It seems useful to me, as I just spent so much time looking for my cable needle - couch diving - and also the needle for sewing off loose ends. Seems a little pricey tho. I think a homemade version would be easy enough to figure out.
