Hi everyone,

My name is Tobi, and I have been a quiet member here for the past couple of months. I am also a graduate student who is writing her Master's thesis on knitting. (You have to pick a topic you enjoy, right? )

I am researching the role that knitting played in the lives of American women in the 1960s and 1970s. I need your help! I am looking for American women, born between 1930 and 1970, who were actively knitting during the 1960s and 1970s. If you fit this criteria (or come fairly close, I am very flexible) please help me out by telling me your knitting story!

I have created a knitting survey, which I have put up on a website with all the details of the thesis project and research. The URL is:
www.knittingsurvey.bravehost.com

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a private message. Or, my email and other contact information are posted at the website.

Thank you in advance for your help! The more surveys I receive, the better informed and more accurate my paper will be. Thank you!

-graycie

I'm a New Zealander but fit into the other categories - will that count?

Sorry, I don't fit either. I was born in 1941 and learned to knit in 1948. It looks like you are only interested in knitters who learned in their 20's. There was a lot more that went on in the 60's then that, and I think you are going to get one sided information. Remember, there were a lot of women who actively rejected knitting along with their bras. You may be better off to broaden your research to who was knitting in the 60's, instead of who was learning to knit in the 60's.

I'm kind of with Fran on this.
You asked for women born between 1930's and 1960.I was born in 1944.Then you say you want someone who learned in the 60'sI learned in the 50's.I think I was 10-11 years old.
Hope you find who your lookng for.

I think you have a good point. When I started this project, I planned to focus women who were learning to knit during the 1960s and 1970s. However, my interest is changing. I would like to focus on why women were knitting during this time in general, regardless as to when they learned.

Also, I do understand that there was more going on in America during the 1960s and 1970s than my survey implies. However, I am focusing on the Women's Liberation Movement and the counter-culture movement in my paper. If there are other influences that knitters feel strong about, I encourage them to let me know. I certainly do not want a one-sided thesis! :-)

I will make the following changes to my survey criteria:
American women born between 1930 and 1970 who were actively knitting during the 1960s and 1970s.

The change will be up in the initial post and on the website shortly. Thank you, everyone, for your feedback. And thank you to those who have completed the survey, and those who now can!

-Tobi

Well, I exactly fit what you're looking for; born 1948, counterculture in NYC 1967-1970, learned to knit during that time (while also marching against the war and for women's movement). I'll fill it out tomorrow.

I did a similar paper last year for a Master's project, but not my thesis. I looked at the history of knitting in America, the women's movement, and the history of the decorative arts. You've chosen a very interesting subject. Good luck with your paper -- you'll have a fun time with it!

Graycie,
Very exciting stuff. I've emailed my contribution to you. I was graduating from high school in the 70's, married a long-haired wood-worker, and sat around knitting while he made furniture and stuff .... those were good times.

I'll be happy to do the survey, if it will help you. I was born in 1932, learned to knit about 1940, took it up actively in the 1950s and never stopped. Good luck with your project.

I just finished doing the survey. Sure brings back some memories, some good and some bad. I never thought much about knitting and history in that way.Good idea.I was just knitting because I liked doing something with my hands I could put down and pick up agin quickly.

Hi ladies!

I am bowled-over by your responses! And so incredibly grateful!! Thank you everyone so much! I will be glad to post my progress as I work on the paper. Perhaps when I finish (which won't be for another year) I will put it up on a website and post the link here so you can read it, if you are so inclined.

Thank you again, everyone! And keep those surveys coming! :-)
