Hi everyone, I was wondering if we can dye a complete, knitted item (a sweater). I don't have the tools to wind that much yarn and I don't think I would be able to achieve a consistent color for the sweater. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! ~Linda |

The chances of getting an even dye job on a knitted garment aren't great. You generally get the most even color if you dye the roving and then spin, dyed yarn is slightly blotchier, and dyed whole-cloth is rarely even in tone throughout.

Sure you can knit a complete finished item. You'll need a big enough container, and if you want a non-variegated finish, you need to pre-wash the item, then make sure it's wet and evenly wrung out.
Mix the dye and water in your big container. For a whole finished item, I would use a big stock pot and heat it on the stove, while CONSTANTLY & GENTLY moving the garment around, to make sure that the color is evenly distributed. Then let it cool and rinse in water the same temperature as the dying water.
