Yesterday, while watching what I think was a re-run of Ellen, Diane Sawyer had listed in her yearbook as a hobby, "if time allowed, knitting." Ellen and her both laughed about it and Diane said she was a twit (I think that was her word but can't remember for sure).
Then, on CSI last night, which was in Hollywood instead of Las Vegas, one of the cops was in a situation in which she could lose her job, and she said, "What am I going to do? Knit?"

I love that CSI line. What would you do if you lost your job? That's not a rude reference, it's a true line. If I were going to possibly lose my job, I'd use it, too.
As for Ellen, you could choose to think that she was a twit for the "if time allowed" bit. As if her highschool life was just so busy and special. But I'm a fan of putting my own spin on things. Life is too short to get worked up over TV.

We watched that same CSI last night. As soon as she said it, my DH and I both looked at each other and said "and what's wrong with that??!!"

I was sitting there knitting, of course, watching CSI when the lady made the commet about knitting. I retired so I had time to knit. I wanted to smack her one. LOL

| I was being retired and "sitting around knitting" that motivated me to open a store- doing very well by the way! Think I have the last laugh on a TV show that obviously doesnt know the whirlwind popularity of knitting! KL |

See, I don't see how that illustrates that the show "obviously doesn't know the whirlwind popularity of knitting." Explain, please? Couldn't it be that the show indeed KNOWS the popularity of knitting and that's why they used it as an example?

| Could be, but I wouldn't think they would use it is such a demeaning manner If the research had been done but then I'm not a script writer so who knows. KL |

This is what I meant in another post about people putting their own tone on things. Others view it as demeaning, I view it as anything but. Different strokes... (And Plath, I know you weren't "worked up" exactly, but some of the threads...it's almost as if non-knitters are threatening to take away our needles and first-born children and cats, some folks get so upset.)

I can see both sides - either they mentioned it because of it's gain in popularity (although not likely) or they are still archaic enough to think that knitting is useless and a last resort. Of course maybe it was the actor's adlib - perhaps she'd rather be at home knitting! My DH also laughed when he heard that line and I was sitting beside him knitting!

| Eh. I don't care one way or the other. They could do a whole hour long show about how knitting is the dorkiest thing in the universe, and I'd just sit back with my queen of dorkness crown and knit away. :) |

I was in good company last night! I also watched CSI while knitting and thought "whats so wrong with that" when she made the knitting comment. Jenny WA State |

Me too. And the funny thing is, I'd be watching JUST because they were even talking about knitting. Even if they're insulting it, I still want to hear them talk about it LOL.

I watched CSI last night, too. I was miffed at first, but then I thought about how they could have inserted *any* hobby into that line, but they used knitting because it is so pervasive now. We've come a long way, baby. ;)

Actually, in my lazier days I have contemplated reading knitting blogs all day so I'd get fired, and live off the severance while using up my stash.
I'm KIDDING. Mostly. (But if you ever catch me with an Urban Sombrero...) |

I was also knitting while watching CSI with my family. When the character made that comment, which I heard as a slight insult,I shouted out "Hey!" at the TV. I had to explain to the family why the comment bothered me.My reaction reminded me of the Geiko (can't spell it) commercial where they make a comment about 'even a caveman could do it.."(or somthing like that) and the caveman/cameraman storms off the set. I'm cracking up here. I was also knitting while I watched and shouted Hey! Then I looked at DH and we both cracked up. I do perceive it as a mild put down, but I'm not annoyed. I thought it was funny. Plus, it's funny that they have noidea how many people (as evidenced here) were knitting while they watched.

I also caught the CSI quip. I think she almost said it under her breath! ( I was unravelling a wool thrift store sweater while I was watching). I was a tad offended, but took it more like her character was not one to just sit at home and not be active in society somehow (not that knitters don't or can't contribute). But we're talking about CSI and they already showed how much they know about knitting on the NY show. The world in general will always have the stereotype of an old woman sitting in a chair waiting to die, knitting away her last days, as if they were both dull and meaningless. Is it time to educate the folks at CSI?????

| Hmmm, maybe I'm just cutting them some slack because I like the show, but I took it as more of a comment on her as a "totally comsumed by the job - too driven to have any outside interests or hobbies" type character than as a negative comment about knitting. The no-life outside the job is such a frequent cop-show stereotype. I suppose though, if it had been a guy they would have substituted golf for knitting! |
