Don't believe everything you hear about yarn at a "commissary". Martha made it herself and she made it out of steel wool scrubbing pads. The used ones.

Just saw a post on another board that Lion Brand Yarn is creating a pattern for the "Martha" poncho. It will be posted on their site asap, probably next week. They said they had the most requests ever for this pattern.
Now, we need to postpone spring until we all get a chance to make ours and wear them! |

Hi ~ Here is the text of the email from Lion Brand Yarn. If you subscribe to their newsletter, they will notify you when the pattern is ready:
"Martha's Poncho
After receiving the largest number of requests ever for a pattern, Lion Brand is creating a Homespun® pattern to match the poncho that Martha Stewart wore for her return home this week.
Our newsletter and web site next week (we’re working as fast as we can!) will feature the pattern and picture of the new poncho. We’ll send an email as soon as it’s ready."
I regret that a criminal still has such popularity, but I DID love the poncho!

shaggy Every day a peddler pulled his cart of wool from his home to the village market. It was a long trip. He had to travel around the perimeter of a large lake that was owned by the town tycoon, a modernday scrooge. One day during the winter the lake froze over. The peddler realized that he could cut off 2 miles from his trip if he crossed over the lake. He was spotted halfway across the lake by the tycoon. Scrooge came racing out of his mansion and screamed at the peddler, "I’ll be danged if I let anyone pull the wool over my ice!" |

I thought her poncho was a nice one. As I was watching her get on the plane, I was thinking, what a pretty poncho, just the right size, plenty of room for arm movement.
Being somewhere to knit for a long while without distractions would be great- but Laura, there was another post a little while back about knitting while on a jury, They don't let you do it!

| Actually, that post said the pattern was SIMILAR to the one Martha was wearing. So far, only the person who made it knows what pattern she used. |

This is an article that was in the NY Daily News today about this subject....
Knit-wits crave Martha poncho
Coming soon to a knitting klatsch near you: a pattern for Martha Stewart's infamous prison-break poncho. The nation's top yarn company will introduce a free "Welcome Home" poncho pattern, satisfying crocheters and knitters who took one look at the domestic diva's garment and were hooked.
"There's so much demand for that pattern," said Debbie Stoller, author of the popular "Stitch 'n beach: The Knitter's Handbook."
"Everyone wants to make it."
Soon after Stewart boarded a plane to New York wearing the handmade garment, Lion Brand Yarn fielded hundreds of E-mails and calls - the most requests it has ever gotten for a pattern.
"People are saying, 'You read our minds,'" said Alana Rabinowitz, director of consumer marketing for Lion Brand.
The free pattern will be ready Tuesday or Wednesday on the yarn company's Web site (www.lionbrand.com). But for those who need a quicker fix, a knockoff poncho on eBay is going for $152.50.
"There's been so much buzz," said Barbara Hillery, founder of the New York City crochet guild. "Everyone is wondering how to make it."
Last Friday, do-it-yourselfers across the country logged onto Internet message boards and began pondering the poncho's design. Chatter over the pattern landed crochet near the top of the Yahoo! Buzz Index on Tuesday, with searches on the topic jumping 8% the day after Stewart shared the poncho's origins at her New York offices.
It was a going-away present, she told her staff, from a fellow inmate who crochets 12 hours a day with yarn from the prison commissary.
"The night before I left, she handed it to me and said, 'Wear it in good health,'" Stewart recalled.
Staying true to the original design of Stewart's blue-and-tan cape, Lion Brand's first pattern will be crochet. In a few weeks, it will introduce a knit version.

I can't believe the amount of press given to this poncho! I expect it from us, but from the general public? WOW! Yesterday USA Today had a small squib about the fuss, and about how many thousands of posts to knitting and crocheting boards there were, as well as pattern requests. Leno had a great joke about it. He said Martha really caused a problem for the women who crocheted the poncho for her. When they got wind of such a great product made for 12 cents an hour, Wal-Mart ordered 2 million of them. I'm sure the jokes will keep on coming!

If lying to keep yourself out of trouble makes a gal a criminal... This country needs a lot more prisons for the kids. Every person who's ever tried to talk themselves out of a speeding ticket and into a warning has obstructed justice. Every person who's ever underreported a single penny on their 1040 has lied about income to the government. Like a kid, Martha wasn't locked up for spilling the juice, but for lying about it.
I'm surprised prison officials allowed crochet hooks, but I suppose they follow the airline's code of safety. I'm also wondering what kind of yarn would be sold at a prison commisary!

| Martha's poncho, who would guess it would be such a hit. I received an email from Lion Brand Yarns--they are working out the pattern in both Knit and crochet. I would guess that you can log on to Lion Brand and when they have the pattern they will post it. |

http://www.lionbrand.com/ is a link I somehow got that has a blurb about the poncho and the promise of the pattern soon. I have no idea how soon or how close the pattern will be but I thought it was worth passing on. Thanks, Lisa |

Commisary items are paid for by the inmates. Studies written on female inmates details that women pay for all of their own luxuries with money that they earn while incarcerated or money that is sent to them by their loved ones (yes, this includes feminine hygeine products, imagine buying your tampons on $.20 a day!). |

| Yes, the scarf and poncho were definately more exciting than the trial! According to the Lion Brand website, they will be posting the pattern to the poncho in the next week or so. I'm hoping that it's knit and not crochet! |
