Do people really give presents on Valentine's day? I thought it was just a ploy by Hallmark to sell greeting cards!

..... same sort of amazement here. It never would have crossed my mind to knit anything for Valentine's Day although now that I think about it a cute knitted stuffed toy like a bear or something would be nice or a little knitted red devil

There is a heart shaped water bottle out there with a knitted cover find it at www.woolandcompany.com I am personally knitting up a Fiber Trends scarf pattern "Falling in Love Scarf" out of some alpaca I have.
I've also seen a felted heart potholder pattern.

What about a devil's horn hat?
I've never liked Valentine's Day. I've never been able to get into it. But more happiness for those who celebrate it. (I am also the type who doesn't send out Christmas cards and who wishes I wouldn't get them. Unless they're handmade or extremely special for some reason they're just wastes of paper. This year I got one card from a good friend--I'll keep that one, and many cards from folks I barely talk to.)

I'm also one of those who doesn't knit anything, let alone give Valentine's gifts.

I think on Valentine's Day, knitters should knit something wonderful for themselves. Who is going to love our knitting more?

My great niece's birthday is the 10th of Feb. so about three years ago I combined a birthday and valentine's day gift for her. It was a red sweater bordered with hearts and made another matching one for her American Girl doll. Don't know if she ever wore it or not, but I had fun doing it. Even got the gauge right for a change. She's the only one I give Valentine gifts too and of course that is because it is so close to her birthday.

Here's a free pattern for a knitted "sweetheart hat".
http://www.sheeweknits.com/designs_free.htm
In preparation for this Valentine's Day (although not technically a Valentine's gift) I am knitting baby clothes. My neice, who's birthday is Valentine's Day, and who's spouse ALSO has a Valentine's Day birthday, is expecting a baby. The due date is February 15th. We are all wondering if it will also arrive on Valentine's Day!

Wow, never thought to knit for Valentine's Day. Don't think I will because I have enough on my plate for birthdays and Christmas. Then again, my hubby wanted golf club covers and I was just going to give them to him as soon as they were done, but I could just give them to him then. LOL We usually just go out to dinner for Valentine's Day. Might not even do that this year because we're taking our daughter to Disney World for a week in March and need to save save save!

Maybe it's regional? Growing up everyone I knew got Valentine's gifts. Usually they were candy/food or inexpensive things like a CD or book. My DH and I exchange Valentines. This year, I was going to knit him a sweater for his b-day, but since I didn't get it done in time he's getting it for v-day;-) One year he got a pair of hand knit socks. I would say generally shoot for something small/simple and quick to work.

Marlene - How cute! Wouldn't that be neat if the baby was a Valentine's baby too? I also have a niece who was born on Valentine's Day. It's a cute birthday for a girl, but I wonder if she ever got tired of the red & white themed birthday party? I'll have to ask her.

I think I will make some nice washcloths with hearts on them, or maybe heart shape, for some friends who would enjoy them. Just for fun. I have some pink and some white cotton yarn put away. Chayah in very snowy sleety NY.

The heart scarf is at Knitty.com the breast cancer issue, I believe. I don't have the exact link. I've been thinking about starting this one too. S.

I'm just going to chime in with the other people who have said something along the lines of, "Wait, people knit things for Valentines Day?"
... it had never even crossed my mind. |
