Please share your favorite online shops. I'm looking for a good selection of sock yarn at prices I can afford. Right now, that means LOW prices!
Many thanks!

Hi Moreyarn, I really like elann.com. I have just received their newsletter through the mail and love the fact that they include samples of their yarn as well as the colours. The prices are really good as well. And for those who love to feel the wool. This site is a really great one. I haven't really try any of the other ones, yet, but now that the kids are back in school I have 190 days to myself to go exploring.

Hi Moreyarn, Bobbi Reich at www.eweknitkits.com has Fortissima sock yarn on sale right now. The selection is limited, but it's worth a look. Great customer service at this site, by the way. Happy hunting.

Hi. Yarn Forward (http://www.yarnforward.com) also has good prices on sock yarn and good service, too. I second the vote for eweknitkits - Bobbie Reich is excellent and incredibly helpful. The Fifth Stitch (http://www.fifthstitch.com) has a great selection and good service, too, but not discounted prices. http://www.theknitter.com has free shipping and a good selection but the service varies wildly - I've had good experience but others have not. Also, check http://www.eknitting.com - they have a clearance page and may have some sock yarns on it (you can go to the yarns page, then do a search with clearance and sale boxes checked). Have fun! Carol p.s. if you subscribe to the socknitters list at yahoo, you sometimes get special deals on sock yarns not available to the general public

Hi,Moreyarn -- My favorite online yarn store is www.carodanfarm.com. Caroline's prices are reasonable, she has regular specials, she ships quickly (and by Priority Mail, which I like because it's less expensive), and she carries more sock yarns than I'll ever be able to knit up! Jane

I second the votes for Ewe Knit Kits and Carodan Farms! They are both top-notch vendors. The prices are good, and they ship very promptly.
The Fifth Stitch (http://www.fifthstitch.com) has a huge selection of sock yarn, but I'm a little creeped out by the God stuff. Every time I think about ordering from them, I start to wonder what kind of mailing lists I'm going to end up on. To be fair, though, Carodan Farms also displays a Jesus-fish prominently on their website, and nobody has started sending me pamphlets yet.
If you want Mountain Colors yarn specifically, look no further than Caryll Designs (http://www.carylldesigns.com). Caryll is wonderful; she ships quickly and has all the great 3 Trails Design patterns. I can't say enough good things about her. :-)

To Beth - I share your discomfort with having other people's religion shoved down my throat, but having ordered a bunch of times from Carodan Farms and Fifth Stitch, I can report no proselytizing emails, no religious junk mail, and no fresh-faced young men in suits at my doorbell. (But oddly enough, I keep getting these porn-site spams about farm animals.....) Carol

Beth,
I had never noticed the Jesus-fish on the Carodan Farm web page until you pointed it out! I've had absolutely no proselytizing from them, just great products and super service.

I also love elann.com. Their new discounted yarns come out every Tuesday morning. Their site is very easy to navigate. Who ever put it together should get an award. Another site I've had good luck with is www.sweaterkits.com. They have some nice sock kits and the prices are very reasonable. Actually I just got my first kits from them a couple of days ago and everything is wonderful! I got the Wild Flowers Pullover and the Peacock Tail Sock kit. Nice yarns, beautiful colors and easy to follow instructions. The sweater kit even came with a really neat carrying bag. Nice touch!

I have just received an order apiece of sock yarns from Carodan Farms and theKitter.com and I am very pleased with both of them. I must have done something wrong tho, because the Carodan farms order took over two weeks to get here...next time I will specify Priority! The waiting was agony!

I've had wonderful service from handknitting.com . Nancy contacted me swiftly to let me know that an item would be backordered & really helped me out when I made an error.

www.thewoolshack.com.au offers some great items for sale too. Emma is a lovely lady to deal with and she is very quick to respond to emails.

My two favorite online yarn sources lately are www.yarnware.com and www.onefineyarn.com. Good selection, some bargains, good communication and prompt shipment. But my best source for sock yarn has been eBay, it's had a really nice selection. You have to comparison shop enough (even just browsing online) to know the going price for the yarn, though.

Try I also vote for elann and eknitting. I compiled a list of about 35 of my favorite sites for a presentation at our local knitting guild. If you e-mail me, I'll get back to you and mail you the complete list with comments for $1.00 for xeroxing and postage. But meanwhile, try these: fiberartshop.com-50 yarn companies fibershop.com-130 yarns, bag discounts gotyarn.com-35 companies knitpicks.com-the only site I know that allows you to search for yarn by color. And get this! the site enables you to look INSIDE pttern books at all the designs before you buy. personalthreads.com-9,500 (that's right) items velona.com-super prices on discontnued yarns, but new specias aren't posted very often yarns-and.com-100 companies did somebody else mention yarnware.com27 companies-25% off 100-150 yarns I could have knit 25 sweaters for all the time I've spent browsing and drooling on-line! I vote for Elann and Petternworks, although I have had recently not so great service from Patternowrks, poerhaps because of their changed circumstances. I have to severely restrain myself when I get on elann.

I make a lot of afghans and my favorite yarn for them is Caron's Simply Soft and my favorite source is http://www.herrschners.com. I wish they were a bit faster getting my order to me but I do love their free shipping specials.

I like Ram Wools - www.ramwools.com - They have lots of really pretty patterns, yarns, books, and, are very good to work with. They have an appealing website that is steadily getting more customer friendly all the time. They are a Canadian company, but, have a button for American prices. They are great to work with, too, if you are looking for something special. Replies are fast, and, purchases get to you in a reasonable amount of time. Ram Wools Selkirk yarn is very nice. If you like to knit with cotton, check out Mission Falls website. www.missionfalls.com I wrote to them for an old dye lot, and, they really went out of their way to help. They can guide you to the places that have their yarn. jh |
