I just got home and WOW! It was much, much, much bigger than I thought it would be. Are they all this big? I got to pet several very nice llamas, alpacas, and angora bunnies. So cool! I want a goat for my back yard. I managed to get away without buying anything but it was tough. I enjoyed seeing a bunch of KR-ers there, too.

I believe ours is the biggest one in the country, Christina! It was so nice to meet you, and the other new-to-me faces, and fantastic as always to see Clara, and Jenn, and Bess, and Martha - (retreaters - Lissa and I even ran into Edie, and she sends her love!)
Lots of fun - and I'm going back today with DH and SS!!! I bought enough amazingly scrumptious superwash merino to make a sweater (I think it will be a cardigan) , got the book "Knitting for Anarchist" and got a great deal on some merino/silk blend fiber... because I ordered my spinning wheel from our beloved Stony Mountain Fibers (if anyone's going today, the owner, Barbara, comes to our retreats and teaches a class, then gives us great deals. She's precious)!!!!!
More shopping to do today!

It was truly a wonderful day for the event, and what a turnout!! Friends with booths told me they'd sold out of a lot of their stuff on Saturday (wondering WHAT they were going to sell on Sunday!) All that fiber love is terrific to see! Poor Clara and her allergies, though - what a combination of spring weather and animal fur, fleece & straw - it's enough to give ANYONE red eyes!! I hope you're breathing easy, Clara!

Went back today with DH and 11-year-old SS, and not only did SS want to spin on a wheel (and did better than I did on the Fricke!) but asked me to teach him to knit!
Bess taught him how to drop spindle over lunch, and I gave him mine and a touch of fiber, and he rode home to his mom spindling in the car!
It was such a great festival... So really, where's my toaster?

It was a great time and perfect weather. It waas fun seeing all the KR people at lunch. Some I had met before, others were knew to me although familiar from their forum names. For some reason it seemed it took me longer to get through the festival this year than last and i had a hard time seeing it all before ihad to leave. That's why I kinda scarfed my lunch and ran! I didn't spend as much time looking at the animals as last year and I still had trouble seeing it all.
I bought some gorgeous wool/mohair handpaint in shades of black, blue and violet. I think I will make Rosemary's sweater in the Green Mountain Spinnery book. Mostly plain stockinette with a cable detail at the shoulders.
I got a real pretty linen/silk.rayon blend -- well, not really a blend, more like the 3 yarns plied together -- to make a summer top.
Then I got some alpaca tweed - Peruvian Tweed -- 1800 yards for $60! I have an idea of the sweater I want to make from that, but I don't know how to do the neck. I'll ask about that elsewhere. It's naturally colored alpaca, a ply of black and one of dark golden brown. It's lovely.
I also bought some beautiful buttons for a future cardigan.
I will psot pictures on my picture trail site of the festival and the new additions to my stash in the next few days.

We came home last nite. Boy, was it fabulous!!! However, I'm sure my husband feels that I owe him big time for keeping me company. He didn't think it was much bigger than Rhinebeck, but I found it to seem much larger with more vendors, more animals, and more activities.
Some of the booths were packed, and by the end of the afternoon it was clear that they had sold a lot of their stock. I did very well at Brooks Farm (their yarn is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous), Foxhill Farm (Cormo yarn that is just unbelievable - and new this year, a fabulous combination with silk) and Mostly Merino. It was a very successful day for me!!!
Next year I'd like to meet up with the rest of you. I'm sure it will be more fun for me! Karen |

I am soooo jealous of you all. Once again I couldn't make it this year, even though I live less than 1 hour away. Next year, come h-ll or high water, I'll be there, and thanks to your feedback, I'll know to go on Saturday morning. Please post as many pics as you can, so I can be there vicariously.

I made it both days, though didn't get to see any of you KRers 'cause I was with some guild friends. I took a class on low whorl spinning, bought several kinds and colors of fiber to spin, and some great looking linen yarn to make a top for myself. Oh, and a Turkish spindle. And lots of food. I had a wonderful time. I also tried out several spinning wheels.....

It was great getting to see some of you face to face at the festival. I had felt like achrisvet. It seemed to take me much longer to get through all the booths this year. I think it was more crowded than I remember from past years. I found myself wishing for rain :)
I got to meet Annie Moddesitt and purchase a copy of her book Confessions of a Knitting Heretic. I started reading it while resting my tired toes last night.
I got two skeins of a 55/45 mohair/wool blend from Ellyn cooper's Yarn Sonnets in lovely shades of mauve, olive, gray, and pinks.
I also found a lovely blue fluffy scarf blend to knit up on size 15s.
Overall I did a lot of looking, and even more talking. Hope to see some of the locals in Columbia, MD on Monday night at Borders Bookstore. |

I agree...WOW was definately my reaction when I walked up to my first booth...first of many fibers to be handled...This was my second Sheep&Wool...but you are never prepared for the glorious fiber overload. I got there late...my sig-other was a tad cranky and ill...so we went slow...
I bought the most lovely silk merino blend (ee-gads it was expensive)but it reminds me of the Phil Onde http://www.breiweb.nl/nl/dept_514.html in the most lovely periwinkle fade to lightest blue.
I brought my lil pixie and she petted every sheep that would let her...but she fell in love madly with the llamas...we kept going back...
Too much fun...would have only been better if I had met some of you there...

| I certainly understand the exhuberance and excitement felt by all. Clara, Bess, Marfa, Jen and all the others I met-you guys are great people! Thank you for making me and my son feel so welcome! Its true that strangers are friends you haven't met yet. Knit On! Maybe next year we can tailgate ( <-- Danger: Man thinking!) |

Just a reminder that anyone who's nearby can come see fellow knitters for a third day in a row tonight at Borders in Columbia. At 7pm, it's our first "Knit Knite!" Just come on out (you can even come to, N2RockWlls, just don't do too much of that man-thinking stuff.....

I had the absolute best time on Saturday!!! Met up with Amie (Rosebyany) and Julie at 8:45 and proceeded to fondle and drool all day. The KR lunch was GREAT! Got to see old friends, and made new ones. Bought some scrumtious yarn, and a woolie winder for my wheel. I'm actually enjoying my very sunburned shoulders, 'cause they remind me of how they got that way - having an idyllic day with dear friends, indulging my fiber obsession. I got to hug Marfa and Bess and Jen and Carolyn and Elaine and Anita and Debbi and ChristinaP and Patricia and Clara and I'm sure I forgot some, which is only a reflection of my rotting brain and not of lack of esteem for those I forgot.
Sigh - a whole year until we can do it again!!!

It was great on Sunday - not as crowded and I was able to spend more money than I planned! I saw Clara and many of my KR friends and it was wonderful to have all those hugs and smiles. For you long term KRers, I saw Rebecca and she is doing fine. She just doesn't have the time available to chat very often.
I agree about the Brooks Farm fibers - I was on may way out and fell in love with a brown-blue varigated mohair/silk/wool mix. My guild friend M.N. and our LYS owner were there at the same time and they both encouraged me. Brooks only took cash and I was running low, but MSW thinks of everything including an ATM, so I was able to get it.
I got one of the nylon eyelash novelty yarns from Roz Houseknect to make a scarf for my niece - so soft and colorful. And enough colors of a cotton mix from Sheridan Farms to make a sweater. And some mohair colors to play with - maybe entrelac?
I would have stayed longer but my mule (DH) was tiring out!!!

I went on Sunday with my littlest guy (If any of you were one of the dozens of people who stopped to talk to the redhead with the cute baby in a sling on her chest, that was me!!!) and we had a blast. Besides the fact that it was such a treat for me to just have him instead of all three of my boys, I just had so much fun petting (and dreaming of owning) the sheep. I was good, I didn't buy much, just some unbleched skeins of various yarns to test dye (I did have fun checking out the handpainted that many of the other fiber artists were doing, though!!) Beautiful, beautiful work. And I promised myself that when my guys are all in school full time, I am going to devote myself to getting dyeing so I can have a booth there in a few years :) Yay!

How do. What a wonderful week-end ^..^ Ahhh, a good time was had by all! Of course I bought more than I intended - roving, some different yarns (a couple of different ones for scarves, hats, gloves plus enuf for a sweater - design to be determined in the future - you notice I did not say how far in the future), necessary items for my new-to-me spinning wheel. The lunch picnics of KR groupies were blasts - seeing you all means so much to me. This is only my 2nd year at MD & to you all who wonder if it really is this cool, as Tug McGraw said, "You gotta believe." Truly it is a fiber festival that will knock your socks off. Martha |

I was so glad to get to meet new friends (Martha, Amie, Christina, Patricia and Clara) and have a reunion with Bess, Jen, Lissa and Anita. What a special treat for my first visit to the MD S&W. Here's hoping everyone had a safe trip home. I only got home tonight around 6 pm, so am still pretty beat. I'll be in touch later with a report of the loot I came home with.
Martha, I want to hear how you progress with the Ashford!
