I listed this under Recommended Links too, but if you missed it, Bergere de France has tons of free downloadable patterns at

I printed out a big pile of women's and men's patterns. Only caveat: it's in French, but if you don't the language I think you can follow the directions with the help of one of the translators. The Tips ("Trucs") gives all the abbreviations, explains techniques with decent drawings. It also has a really great Aran (apres-ski?) dog sweater! For the doggie with everything, I guess.
