We're going to New York City for a long weekend at the end of June for my birthday (it's a big one). I want to go to a yarn shop while I'm there so am looking for feedback on favorites. My husband is very patient and would go to several with me but I don't want to push it plus we have lots of things we want to do.

If you only had time to go to one, which one would you pick?

I'll second Purl in SoHo. I go there every time I go to the city even if I'm not in buying mode because their displays and such are so creative. As is their web site.

I've also been to The Yarn Company on the upper west side. They don't have a ton of stock but their web site showed they had a special edition color of Tosh Sock that I had to have. Also near there is Knitty City.

Purl in Soho. It's just so beautifully laid out, and the fabrics lighten the whole look, I think. Also, Soho is a great neighborhood for walking around. When we did it, my husband walked for awhile and then met me back in the store.
For a completely different experience, pop into Habu Textiles. It's on an upper floor of a commercial building on 29th St between 6th and 7th Avenues. It's not like anywhere else you've been, that's all I'll say. I dragged a colleague with me when I stopped there after a business meeting, and she just could not believe it.
Have fun, and bring your (stylish) walking shoes!
