 | Button Dolls During the summer months Linda Van Koetsveld and her husband work in my town as professional gardeners. They tended the gardens outside my summer shop, which is how I first met them.
Each day at lunchtime they'd join me on the porch for lunch and storytelling - for they have lived many adventures, from George's childhood in Indonesia to their time in Holland, California, Newfoundland, and Maine.
For years Linda told me about her button dolls, each made by hand with unique findings - a scrap of lace from her mother's sewing box, a pink button found in an old shop in Canada, a string of tiny beads she'd originally bought for her now-adult daughter. Each found its way to these special dolls, which she would make during the winter months when gardening was not possible.
This fall, Linda showed up on my doorstep with a surprise. She held up a little doll with blonde hair, glasses, lace-trimmed pants and matching top, and a ball of yarn and needles in one hand. "It's the Clara Knitter Doll!" she exclaimed.
It was too adorable to keep to myself, so I asked Linda if she'd be willing to share more knitting button dolls with you here. Her gardens put to bed for the winter, Linda willingly obliged.
Each is lovingly and patiently handmade by Linda, and each is completely unique.
Dolls measure approximately 5 inches tall by 4 inches wide, some a little taller or wider depending on the style.
