Needle Industries (India) Private Ltd.

Located in the Nilgiri mountains of South India, Needle Industries (India) Private Ltd. had its beginnings in 1949 as a manufacturer of gramophone needles. Knitting needles came in the 1960s, then plastics in the 1990s—Pony Pearl needles were the result.

The Offering
Today the company also makes a small line of smooth rosewood single-pointed needles. Rosewood is an attractive alternative to the standard birch and bamboo needles because of its deep rich color and relative strength.

The warm, lightweight Pony needles have a long taper that ends with a blunt tip. All of the needles measure 13 3/4 inches in length and are capped on the other end with a basic flat-edged barrel that has one rib of lathe-turned detail.

The brand (Pony) and metric size are marked on the needle shaft in white, while the U.S. size is painted on the tip of the needle cap. This can be convenient if, like me, you keep your needles in a jar and are used to selecting from above.

You'd be advised to keep a needle-sizing tool handy, however, because the white paint easily came off when I scraped it with my fingernail.

The Verdict?
These needles are a reasonable option if you're looking for a different kind of needle. If rosewood is your goal and you're willing to spend the same amount of money and wait a little longer for the needles, however, I urge you to consider the exquisite one-of-a-kind cocobolo rosewood needles from Turn of the Century.
